Emergency Shutdown & GWSCAN Error code 0226 Sector Relocation Err

Hello,
I have a Gateway T1620 Notebook. Randomly the system shuts down, showing a blue screen saying it did an emergency shutdown to protect the system & to check the memory and possibly uninstall any new software. I don't think it is software related.
BigFix had been suggesting running the GWScan program so... the Extended Test on the C drive, a Hitachi 4TS542525K9SA00, came up with the error code 0226, Sector Relocation error.
I am wondering if the shutdown is being caused by that error.
If there is a solution other than replacing the drive...
If not what do I need to know in order to do the job myself?
Thanks in advance.

My Gateway 7405 randomly shuts down. It does not matter how long it has been running for. It has shutdown during bootup and after running for many hours. Just before it shutsdown the fan accelerates to...

You might try changing the Power Options (its in the Control Panel) Properties so that all windows are set to NEVER. That is, so that it will never automatically turn off monitor, hard disks or go to standby. Also turn off all the alarms. This worked for my Presario R3000 running WinXP Sp2 which would shut off for no apparent reason. Having said that, you should blow out your fan with compressed air occasionally. And check that your power cord is OK. When you pull out your power cord, the battery icon should show operation.

probably a bad sector in the hard drive. hat will cause your problem Hard drives are good for a 5 to 10 year average if used everyday. If the computer is switched off without going through the normal proceedures of shutting it down will decrease the life span as well

Laptop randomly shuts down and shows a blue screen saying

Make sure you don't have any unecessary programs loading up into windows when your laptop boots up. The next time the system randomly reboots check to see if the laptop feels a bit warmer then normal. Could be that your air vents are being blocked by dust. That would cause the air not to flow properly. Take a can of air and blow the vents clear so the air can flow properly and that would take care of the problem.

While trying to bootup my harddrive makes this clicking noise, and shows a message operating system not found, how do I correct this problem

Hi Mark,
The above message seems to hard drive issue. I recommend you to check with GWSCAN link. GWSCAN will isolate the issue with hard drive or not. http://support.gateway.com/s/HARDDRV/Misc/GWSCAN512/GWSCAN512su46.shtml
I believe above link will help to confirm your issue.

My computer won't shut down it just keeps restarting

The most common shut down problem is that the system will reboot rather than shutting down. In most cases, the reboot is triggered because Windows XP is designed to reboot after a critical failure. To stop windows from rebooting in case of a failure, you need to take the following steps:
Right click on My Computer, Select Properties, Click on advance tab, Click on Settings under Startup and Recovery, Uncheck the option Automatically Restart under System failure, Click Ok twice and try to shutdown the pc. If it shows any error code then let me know
