Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Fridge cools for awhile then compressor cycles on and off

The fridge cools fine for about 5-6 hours. Once it reaches temp, it's fine, until the compressor needs to start again. The compressor comes on for approximatley 10 seconds then off for 2 minutes. This cycle just keeps repeating. I was thinking maybe the run capicator, start relay, or compressor. I'm leaning more towards the compressor being the culprit. The compressor is warm to the touch, but not hand burning hot. If I unplug the unit for a few hours then plug it back in, the whole process starts over again. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The freezer is on the top. The fridge is a Kenmore model 253.XXXXXXXXX

I replaced both the relay and the run capacitor. I believe the relay definitely was bad. If I shook it, it would rattle. I plugged the fridge back in and it started fine. I waited until it had reached temperature and placed a cup of water in the freezer. It only froze a thin layer of ice over the top of the glass after sitting overnight. This morning I increased the temperature setting and the compressor would click on for about 5 seconds then off and this repeated about four times before the compressor finally started. I find it difficult to believe the brand new relay would be bad. I am going to check it again when I get home around 5:00 and if it's not working, trying jumping the thermostat wires to see if it kicks on. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions. I forgot to mention when I took the old relay off and shook it, it sounded like something was rattling on the inside, a good indication the relay was bad (I think). Could a hard start kit actually damage the compressor (more power)? Also, if I short the two thermostat wires together, would that force the compressor to attempt to run (just to test)? Thanks

The relay was bad, however, one of the ground wires was not making good contact. Rerouted the ground wire to a bare spot on the chassis and everything is working great. Thanks for all your help.

Not the compressor. Two reasons why. If your compressor was bad, you would not hear it at all, also the compressor would be very hot, do to the piston not moving and the shaft just moving or the liquid not turning into vapor. One way to check for sure is to take a multimeter and see your voltage. You can also touch the suction and the liquid line, if one is cold and the other is hot or warm then compressor is working ok. Also when you unplug the system and you reset everything, you are not reseting the compressor you are reset the relay

Check for ground wire shorting. Check all your wiring and make sure that all is intact and noting is cut or frayed. If none of those solve this problem. Then it is a bad compressor. You can als try getting a hard start/run capacitor they sell them at Lowes, Home Depot places like that

A hard start will not hurt the system. What it does is takes extra power and helps get the compressor running. It will not hurt aything as long as you follow the directions to wire it properly. And if the relay was making noise then yes the relay was bad. If it was doing it agian after you check it tonight, then you have a bad wiring going on somewhere and need to make sure agian that all the wires are tight, not frayed and ground properly. and grounding the out the Tstat wires will let you know if it is working correctly. and it will not hurt the system either. If it is working correctly just make sure you know which wiress goes where so not to interfere with everything else that has been done so far

Thanks for keeping me up to date and letting me know that it has been fixed. Just a little info for you. If your compressor was going bad. You can to two things to check it out. One is to touch it with your hand if it is so hot that you cannot leave it there for even 1 second then bad compressor the other is that when you check voltage nothing is there bad compressor. Have a great week glad I could assist

ICE FORMATION ON THE PIPE GOING TO THE COMPRESSOR

Adust the temp control, it may have been turned up to full cold. More cooling than you need in the room where it is.
Put a thermometer in the fridge for a few hours, it should be about 4 or 5 degrees C. If its colder, adjust the temp control and measure with the thermometer again, repeat unitl correct temp is reached.

Ro@hotmail.comtemp fridg& frezer will chang 30 to 40 degrees if you open either door it will take a long time for for temp to drop

The compressor is the part which cools the refrigerator.---------- First i will explain the working procedure of your sanyo refrigerator.---------- In the refrigerator, there is a part called compressor, the compressor is the part which cools the freezer section, When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the fridge section and the fridge section gets cold.--------- So the freezer section cooling/ freezing is must.If freezer is not getting properly cooled or not getting cooled, then fridge section will show the low or no cooling problem.--------------
In your refrigerator, its quite possible that compressor is got weak, nor complete faulty but little bit weak.So when you open and close the fridge or freezer door , the compressor is not that strong to maintain the required temperature. So its working hard to cool inside temperature, but its not doing it quickly as it should.---------.---------- In the compressor there is a refrigerant called FREON.With the help of this Freon the compressor cools the freezer section.Freon is a gaseous type cooling agent. The compressor will stop cooling when coolant gets leaked from its chamber.--------- Again recharging the Freon is possible, but the cost for that recharging is approx the cost of new compressor. So its always advisable to get compressor replaced.Because new compressor has warranty for few years.------------------ You can get required parts from from online sites like: --- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site. --------- ----------------
There is manual reset procedure, sometimes the ice gets frosted all over and blocks the ventilation's for cool air to pass from one section to another, and this also causes problem. So directly going for compressor inspection, before that you can try manual reset procedure and see if that helps.---------

The manual reset procedure is as follows : ----
First unplug the unit from main power outlet. Then empty whole unit completely. Then keep both the doors open. Wait for 24 hours. All the ice collected on the coils and in the freezer section will get melted. Clean the water from the sections. Then Connect the power cord of the unit to main power outlet after 24 hours/.Then set the temperature to normal in both fridge and freezer section. It will take approx 4 to 6 hours for your refrigerator to regain its regular cooling/ freezing .So after 4 to 6 hours check , Is the refrigerator cooling properly or is it taking time or temp is dropping once you open close door. If this problems are not noticed, then reset procedure has helped.------- But if same problem is noticed after reset procedure is followed, then you can get the compressor checked. -------- This should help. Thanks.Helpmech.

If you have the door alarm continuously beeping you will need to try and hard reset the unit. Turn the circuit breaker for 4-5 minutes and retry the unit. But if still the 5 beeps are coming on, then its problem with control panel board. Its not detecting door closed.------- The control board needs to be inspected.---------- If the doors are not getting closed, that means some cold air is getting out and thts why temp is not getting set. This is one possibility of temperature problem.-------- But if both doors are closed tight and no issue of air getting lost out, then other possibility for this problem is weak compressor.-----------

The compressor just keeps on running. The problem is weak compressor. The refrigerant in the compressor is got low.The compressor is weak. The compressor needs to be replaced.-------------- The working procedure of this unit is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the fridge section and the fridge section gets cold. The air from freezer to refrigerator passes from the section, in that section the damper is located.------------ But as you mentioned that freezer not cooling this indicates problem with compressor. When compressor cools the freezer section then fridge section gets cold.If freezer section is not getting properly cold then fridge section will not cool properly/.So the problem relates to compressor.---------- In the compressor there is a refrigerant called FREON.With the help of this Freon the compressor cools the freezer section.Freon is a gaseous type cooling agent. --------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Have you tried running it without the fan? I know it sounds funny but it has to get hot (outside the fridge) to get cold inside. Shut fan off and see what happens. Also, keep in mind the more items you put in it that are already cold, or frozen, the faster it will cool inside the fridge. Also take a look up the back of the fridge, with outside cover off to make sure no big wasp nests or similar up there. May need to remove cover at roof and look down if you can't see too good from back of fridge vent.

Fridge and freezer same temp.

First of all, there is only one thing that cools in a fridge and that is the freezer. The fresh food section is cooled by air forced into it from the freezer.
  • You ice maker will not work if the temp inside the freezer is above 5 degrees. It has a thermostat inside it that enables it.
  • The knob that turns the fridge off and on is the thermostat for the freezer.
  • The other knob opens and closes a damper between the freezer and fresh food section.
  • There is a fan that should be running that pulls air from the freezer into the fresh food section.
(The factory does make the discription of the knobs confussing)

Now. turn one of the knobs all the way one way and then the next. If it turns the compressor off, it's the thermostat. If it does not, try the other knob. Once you find the thermostat, set it in the middle of the scale. Now place the other knob the same. Check and see if you can either feel or hear the inside fan running. If so lets go to the back. This is where your compressor is. It is under the fridge and also has a fan that blows on it. You will need to remove the back bottom panel. See if you can tell if the fan is running. Also notice if the fan is blowing into a set if coils. You should also be able to fill the compressor, if it's hot, it's running. If these two are running, and you didn't see a coil at the fan. Take the front kick panel off the fridge and clean the coil that's under the fridge. If it's dirty, give the fridge a couple hours and see if it cools down. If so, this was your problem. If both knobs are set mid scale, both fans are running, the compressor is also running and the coils are clean. You most likely have a bad timer, compressor or thermostat. This is all that's left.

What is the purpose of two temperature control nobs when there is a single compressor in my samsung 280 lts fridge

1.If this is only a fridge the one knob will be for the min and the other for the max.
max. : As soon as you switch the fridge on it will cool down the fridge to max cool down temp. example -2deg.
min. : As soon as the fridge reaches the max cool down temp and it had switch the compressor off, the fridge will start to warm up slowly, by the time it reaches the min allowed warming up temp, it will switch the compressor back on and do the cycle all over again.
2. If it is a fridge/freezer setup, the one knob will be for the fidge and the other for the freezer. If the temp in the freezer is fine a fan is activated and blows all the cool air to the fridge and controls the temp. by activating the fan.

The red warning light will not go out?

1. Has the fridge freezer just been
installed? If so, this is normal and the
light will go out when the correct
temperature has been reached.

2. Has the fridge freezer been loaded
with a large quantity of food? If so,
the light will go out when the correct
temperature has been reached.

3. Have the doors been closed
properly?
