Epson PhotoPC 550: rechargeable batteries have...

By lawyer - usenet poster

The battery cover on my PhotoPC 550 has just broken one of it's flimsy
'hinges'. It snapped while I was loading some rechargeable batteries,
which I noticed where a tighter fit than the standard AA batteries
they were replacing. I have two brands of rechargeables, and both are
longer than the standard AAs, enough to put too much pressure on the
feeble battery cover.
End result is that I can't put batteries in the camera anymore.
I'll try an epoxy glue repair but I'm not optimistic.

1. Can anyone else confirm that rechargeables are longer, or have I
just got some weird ones?
2. Any suggestions on how to get the camera working again? Do Epson
sell spare parts for this model?

Thanks, John

Aren't you using the Epson brand rechargables? The manual specifically states
that these are the only ones to be used in the camera.
I've found Epson to be a very easy company to deal with, kinda like Olympus
used to be.
I'm confident that if you adjust your attitude about 6 degrees to the left and
contact Epson they will make everything right at little or no cost to you the
valued customer.
I don't think I'd mention cramming the wrong batteries into the camera
though...

I have a Minlta Dimage V and use rechargable NiCad's but found the bump on
the positive terminal was too flat to make contact and had to add a solder
blob to the end of each battery. That probably does make it a bit longer
but they still fit, there is quite a bit of play with the spring used.

I guess you got the weird ones. I just compared my rechargeables to
normal AA batteries, and seemed like the rechargeables were even a
very slightly shorter than standards.

I were more conserned about the voltage of those - rechargeables are
1.2V and standards 1.5V. But I have understood that this isn't problem
either, as long as the difference is not really "big" or then the
voltage is higher than normal.
