Problem for HP (56K V90 USB) Modem

HP 56k USB modem prob

By Charlie - usenet poster

Hello
Just got hold of a HP V90 USB modem Model D8384B.

It seems to work fine for spurts of 2 or 3 minutes, and then stops
transfering for 15 seconds, and then starts again *lol*

I've just updated the driver without a change.

Could it be something within the settings?. Everything looks fine. But maybe
a little tweak could solve the problem.

I'm with Digiplus. They use the AAPT network (I think)

Any help appreciated :)

Regards
Rod.

No such luck i'm affraid :(

The modem wouldn't respond with that string.

Would anyone be kind enough to take a look at my modem driver INF file to
see if they can pick any strings out of it?. (I read somewhere that you can
do that if you're having trouble finding them online etc.) I've had a look
myself, and tried a couple of things. The strings that i try will show up on
the modem log, but still wont force the modem to slow down.

I've seached the net looking at all kinds of sites trying to find stuff on
this modem, without any success :(

Thanks!
Rod.

Try:

at&fx3&c1&d2&k3\n3%e2w2+ms=56,1,32000,38000

(Replace 38,000 with maximum connect speed, adjust to give robust connection)

Hi Kwyjibo :)

...

Ah, ok. I was messing around with it this morning, and i used the string you
told me about. However, the modem wouldn't respond. So i dug around a little
and found that if i add a "Z" to the string after the AT+ms=41333 (add the Z
after the AT) it works, and shows up in the modem log as you can see below.
But it's still connecting at 52000 *lol* Bloody thing!

Sounds very high. If the modem connects at a speed higher that what is
sustainable (52K is not sustainable in most cases) it will run fine for a
few seconds (up to a minute) until it starts detecting errors. It then
spends some time 'retraining' which just means renegotiating a lower speed.
This takes some time, during which you will get no data flow. It will
usually do this a few times (up to 4 or 5) until it finds a speed that it's
happy with.

No use changing the com port speed. That is only the speed between your
modem and the PC. Leave it as high as it will go for USB, as the link from
your modem to the ISP will never saturate a USB link anyway. The speed you
want to adjust is the speed your modem connects to the ISP at. Do this by
entering an init string in your modem configuration. Try AT+ms=41333 . (this
may not work on your particular modem - you may need to find a string
specific to the model you have). This will force the modem to connect as a
speed no greater than 41333bps. If this is successful, try again with the
next higher setting. Keep doing this until you get the highest speed that
does not have a problem.

It's USB and not hindered by the old serial interface limits. 921600 is
fine.

Hi Kwyjibo :)

...

It connects at 52000bps every time.

In the modem config settings under DUN. I changed the "Maximum Speed" from
921600 down to 460800. without any change. This is the com port speed
right?. The next speed down is 230400.

Ah fuck, i've just realised something *LOL* From what i remember. on
previous modems i've had. the highest com port speed would be 115200. I'll
try that in the morning when i log on again. see how she goes :)

Regards
Rod. (Who is wondering why the fuck the default speed on this driver is
921600)

Sounds like it might be retraining.

What connect speeds are you getting ? Maybe try slowing the sucker down a
bit and see if that helps.
