Try a different known good battery to see if it charges up and if that doesn't work then its a problem with the motherboard.

Battery not recognised/not charging

Turn the computer off, unplug it, take the battery out. Then hold the power button down for 10 - 15 seconds. Plug the ac adapter back in, but do not put the battery in yet. Boot the computer, then shut it back down. Put the battery back in then boot it again. It should recognize the system now.

Sony vaio PCG-7142L keeps freezing

Can check if the battery is low ... or is not (or cannot) holding a good charge ... when you unplug it (from the charger) ... when this happens ?

If that is the case, it may "freeze" while it is busy trying to store the contents of your memory before it shuts down (or hibernates). Does it shut down (or goes into hibernate if you let it continue to "freeze") for a while ? If so, then it's your battery.

If the battery doesn't hold a good charge, the laptop will run only a short time (while unplugged) before it has to shut down due to low battery. And if this is the case, consider getting a replacement (new) battery. And follow the initial charging instructions (for a new battery) to lengthen the life of the battery.

Power schemes battery

Chances are that your battery doesn't / wouldn't hold a charge anymore. The laptop runs off battery power. When it is plugged in, the AC power "goes right through the battery", to support the laptop's operations. When the power cord is unplugged, and the battery doesn't hold a charge, the laptop will shut down, as your battery is (too) low to continue supporting the laptop's operations.

The easiest way around this problem is to get a new battery for the laptop.
If your battery is (quite) new (and a Lithium battery), you may wish to see if you can "revive" the battery's "life" ... first by depleting the battery (completely), then charging it (until it shows it is full, plus a couple more hours), and repeating this process a few times. If you're lucky, the battery will slowly/gradually start to hold some charge, but, don't expect it to be very long.
The (preferred) way to use re-chargeable batteries is to charge it fully, unplug it from the external power source, use it until it is depleted, then plug in the external power source to charge it up (fully) again .... and NOT to keep it on a power source all the time.

Sony pcg-81114L power supply not detected

If thelaptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out.Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles andwill lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% andgradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR Thebattery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the batterydrops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to anunacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced.

You have done most of the leg work, remove a stick of ram and try again, remove second piece and put back the first and try again, beyond this! you are looking at motherboard issues, a loose DC jack in the laptop will cause intermittent to no power, "common" but requires dis-assembly right down the motherboard level to address.

I cannot get a 3g USB modem to connect to a Sony Vaio. When the software is loaded the connect button does not change colour and does not respond to a click

First check the device manager to see if there is any conflict between the 3g USB modem and the vaio, then have the Plug & play app in add hardware search for the modem, if it doesnt find it , unplug the modem, while the vaio is running the add hardware app and force the laptop to recognize it. then after it recognizes it make sure vaio has the correct drivers to keep it "talking" to each other, and connect to the modem.

SONY VAIO BATTERY CHARGING

This is not a problem, this is a designed function to increase battery life. To adjust this, go to "vaio control centre", and then power management. Inside this is battery care, here you can adjust the settings or de-activate this function.
