Thanks to both who have submitted. The computer is with my daughter in Italy!! She is as non-tech as you can get. So I doubt she will try reseating the memory card. We will try the tapping and see if she can find a tech person there. I will get back to you on this and thanks

Okay if you have lights then I would suggest with the laptop turned off, try reseating the memory then only hook up the AC adaptor with the battery out and see if you get video. If that doesn't work then try putting the memory into another slot and trying the process again. Also make sure there is no dust or dirt on the memory or in the slots. A quick blow of a can of air softly can do the trick to make sure things are clean on the memory and the slots.

If after this you still have no video and the hard drive light is not flickering like its trying to load windows then your motherboard is bad.

Hi,
If after refixing the battery also the issue is not resolved so try to tap num lock when restarting the machine.
if no power is there issue might be related to motherboard.
if taping the num lock glows the lED of numlock means RAm is faulty.

My HP laptop (pavilion dv9700) will not start up. It was working fine then suddenly shut off while the cord was plugged in. The blue ring still lights up where you plug in the power chord, but nothing else...

Try the following:
  1. Unplug the power cord from the laptop.
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds.
  4. Re-insert the battery.
  5. Plug in the power cord.
  6. Try turning on the computer.

WAS WORKING FINE FOR 2 YEARS. ALL OF THE SUDDEN I GET THE BLACK SCREEN. I WAS ABLE TO GET IT BACK ON AND DID A COMPLETE RECOVERY. IT STAYED ON FOR ABOUT20 MINUTES AND THEN AN ERROR MESSAGE ''DISPLAY...

• 1) TAKE OUT YOUR LAPTOP BATTERY
• 2) REMOVE YOUR AC ADAPTOR CORD, that's the wall power, remove it.
• 3) NOW HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR 30 SECONDS.
hat will drain any static electricity that has built up on your laptop system board and many times fixes the problem of a black screen. After the 30 seconds re-connect your laptop to the wall power and hit the power button normally and see if the laptop comes back up.
Replace your battery.
Restart!.

These are the reasons why your pc wont switch on

1. Defective power adapter
2. Defective Processor
3. Defective Motherboard
Note: If you replaced your motherboard check the specs on the previous motherboard it should be the same part number or a replacement part number.

You can purchase your motherboard to HP System Board HP Motherboard

Display not working for HP pavilion dv2000

Try to attach your computer to an external monitor to see if it is a screen issue or a motherboard issue. If the computer does not pick up on the external right away, try to toggle it by holding down the Fn key and striking F4. If you get a picture on the external, then you have only lost the screen and the motherboard shouyld be fine.

My comp shut off and wont turn on anymore.. lightening bolt comes

Please remove the battery and ac adapter and then press and hold the power button for 25 - 30 seconds after that connect the battery back and then try to turn on the machine. if not remove the battery and just plug in the adapter and then try to turn on the machine. If still not working then try to swap the ram. or else your system motherboard requires to be replaced.

HP Pavillion dv9700 won't power up

Try removing the battery and using only power cord to turn the laptop on. If that fails, try turning it on without power cord, just on battery.

If none of those work, then most probable cause of your problem is motherboard. Hopefuly you are either under manufacturer warranty or you have extended warranty with your vendor where you've purchased the laptop.

If your laptop turns on on power cord, but without battery, then battery is the problem. Also, if laptop turns on when it's only on battery but it doesn't when you plug ac cord in it, then the adapter is the problem.
