    I have the exact same problem. It's a band new and Windows can't seem to see it, it reports "Unknown Device"

  • elkwithabow Feb 11, 2009

    Same problem.  It worked fine for 2 months then just disappeared from my computer.  Shows as an unknown usb device but can't access.

SOURCE: WD 1TB USB 2.0 EXT HD - NOT RECOGNIZED

Hi First things first, is the light on the front still coming on? If not try a new power supply or moving the drive to a new shell as the problem is either in the AC adapter or in the shell.

If the light is on it only confirms that you have power, but first try a different set of USB ports and if that doesn't work try a different computer. If it works on the other ports, no biggy, use it there. If it doesn't and works on a different computer then it's likely your registry entry for the device is damaged, get back to me if that is the case. If it doesn't work on other ports or another computer then it's likely the circuitry of either the drive or shell is damaged, take it to a computer store and have the techs swap it into a new shell(about $40). Then have them test it, if it works you're done, if not then it is the circuitry in the drive itself that is damaged and you will need to send it for data recovery if you want the files back.

Send me an update once you have tried these suggestions and let me know how you made out. If you require the help of a pro for the final steps, reply with your country and region and I will locate a reputable facility to assist you further.

Troubleshooting your USB hard drive in Windows see:
http://www.verbatim.com/support/support-article.cfm?support_id=7B8B6B2C-1422-1392-A8B4CF52416BBF75&supportType=Article

  • First check:
Link to determine the hard drive getting enough power:
http://www.verbatim.com/support/support-article.cfm?support_id=7B4B78B1-1422-1392-A837F379D15C6F2E&supportType=Article

  • Next check the hardware in My Computer > Device Manager if there are "yellow marks" for devices that require driver software to be installed.
When devices e.g. printer is connected before you installed the needed software, it can happen that the USB port is no longer recognized.
Then remove the device that shows having problems in the hardware manager.
Next install the software.
Connect afterwards or at the time the computer asks to do so.

Not sure how new your computer is but on some older ones there is not enough power from just one USB port to power the drive correctly. If your drive spins up (sounds like it is revving up) then you should be getting enough power but if not then you will need to purchase a Y USB cable to properly power the drive.

Am having problem my Verbatim Usb 1 tb is not recognising in any port of my PC

if your computer came with a motherboard disc the drivers could be on it
click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or:
if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver
if your computer came with a motherboard disk the drivers could be on it
sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems also make sure the computers Ram and Cmos battery are securely seated
hope this helps

My Verbatim model #47512 1tb makes this beeping sound every time i connect it to my computer why?

That beeping signals a failure to communicate between the disk and the motherboard of the pc - the disk is defective. You have a slim chance of recovering what's on it by removing the actual disk from the external case and plugging it in the a desktop.

My notebook is not detecting this desktop drive (3.5'' 1 TB external desktop hard drive - verbatim). My other 500 GB external hard drives are properly detected.

Go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management Then go into Disk Management. Hopefully you will see a drive with a capacity of about 480 GB (plus or minus), that's your disk.
Right click on it and select change drive letter and change the drive letter to something that isn't in use.
If that doesn't work or it doesn't show up, go into the Device Manager from the Computer Management screen and see if there is anything under disk drives with a yellow or red symbol next to it. If so, right click it, select uninstall, then unplug the disk drive and plug it back in.

Is it still under warranty?

Try connecting it to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting it to a USB port on a different computer.

If it still is not detected, then either exercise the warranty,
or disassemble the case, to find two major parts:
* a disk-drive
* a USB-to-disk-drive adapter

Disconnect the disk-drive and connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in some desktop computer, to see if it is recognized, i.e., if it was the USB-to-disk-drive adapter that has failed.

If it still is not recognized, then it is "dead". You could buy a similar disk-drive, install it into the enclosure, and thus create another external storage device.

Look in the Right panel and single click your USB drive in the "Volume" colume.
Know look at the lower panel and make sure the drive states that it is "Online", look at the "Health" Status. And;
Make sure it has been "Partitioned" in the Layout colume. If not right mouse click the drive letter and select "Mark Potiton as Active".

Right mouse click on the USB drive in the Volume colume> select "Change Drive Letter and Paths"
If there is on drive letter assing to it select the Add button, if one is there, select the Change button and assign one to it or change it to a drive letter that is beyound the number of drives you have.
