Question about PC Desktops

2 Answers

On my main PC I keep losing connectio to the browser, after a few minutes, I have to re-start to get connected again. Internet access remains (Skype, google mail notifer) and my laptop is no problem. I use Windows XP and have broadband via a Netgear modem. I have a 50ft run of cable to my office but I have tried connecting at the line in point without that cable - no difference. The problem started at the same time as an accidental click on a zione alarm upgrade offer (I tried to delete zone alarm later) also I got a Trojan. I upgraded AVG free to Paid version and that quarantined the trojan. I have tried trojan remover (found it dealt with it, registry scanners/fixer) follwed various ideas around the place but still got the problem. Can you help? Sure you can!

Hello there,

I am surprised that someone suggested system restore. Trust me. This is not a problem with your PC. Its your modem. I had this problem with mine a few days ago. In my case it was even allowing my bittorrent to download stuff. But it wiould not let me connect to the internet. To confirm what I said next time you get the problem, dont restart your computer. Just turnoff your modem wwait for two secs, and turn it back on. You will be able to connect to the internet. If yes, then you have to get your modem's ethernet port replaced. Hopefully it works as it did for me.

Regards,
Sai.

Hello, Uninstall ZONE ALARM! You will have many problems with this programm. A recommend you to use SYGATE Personal Firewall v. 5.5 (it's FREE and work EXCELLENT).

Your IP address is probably closed or incorrect, Right click the icon in the applet and select "Repair" wait a few minutes, and it should correct this problem, if not, call your internet provider

What causes my computer Xp monitor to turned OFF in the middle of my internet surfing, but my computer microprocessor is still ON.

Either the monitor is defecive or the video driver card in the PC/computer is defective, the only way to really know for sure is to hook the monitor up to another PC and see what happens.

Asus laptop says it is connected to the internet but it doesnt work . Its not teh router as every other laptop, x box and other wireless devices work fine. it has done this since I bought it a year ago. I...

This may or may not help...i figure what the hell at this point, what have you got to lose. There is the possibility that you picked up malware or a trojan and it has changed the internet settings that will keep you from accessing the internet. I am guessing that all you are getting is the Internet can not connect to page. But if you look at the connection icon, it shows that you are connected to your network....right?

Bring up your home page on your web browser, I am assuming you are using Internet Explorer, but these settings are the same in each browser just in a different area. Now once the window is up, don't worry that you can't connect to the actual page, it doesn't matter, look to the right and click on the drop down menu "tools", scroll to the bottom and choose "internet Options". When this window opens, at the top click on the "Connections" tab. Look at the bottom and choose "LAN settings. Now, only the box that says "Automatically detect settings" should be checked! Everything else needs to be unchecked....period!!

Now, click apply or ok or both and exit. Now refresh the browser page and see if you home page comes up....if it does, then great....do a malware search and destroy with "MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Tool"...you can get it here... www.filehippo.com

Perform a "Quick Scan" only and delete all the infections it finds. If this does not fix the problem....sorry, I tried.

I bought an HP Laptop 3 months ago (with Windows Vista) and the Internet keeps crashing when I'm online. It starts up again automatically, which helps, but I lose the pages I was on. Is is my PC or Vista?...

Try clearing your browser history & cache. When these get to full it causes the problem you describe. You can access these features from the tools icon on your browser>internet options. Hope this helps.

Keep losing wireless network on laptop. completely disappears and can not find it to reconnect

Hi..
I was having the same issue with my notebook. I was losing connectivity to the internet at both home and office through my browsers and outlook consistantly after boot up for approximately 10 minutes. The only way to get more connectivity was to reboot my machine (ten more minutes). Emachines help desk was no help. Their fix all response was to format the harddrive and start over. What I did to fix it was:

Start
Control Panel
Network Connections
There, I disabled the wireless network connection and waited for the hourglass to go away. Then reenabled it and have had wireless connectivity since.

Good Luck ;-)

Sometimes other programs, such as Firefox and AOL, can accidentally be set to your default internet browser. This is how to change it back to Internet Explorer on Windows XP.
[edit] Steps
  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Go to Tools > Internet Options
  3. Click to the Programs tab
  4. Click Reset Web Settings
  5. When the pop-up menu comes up, select Yes.
  6. Another method that does reset all your other options:
  7. Open Control Panel and double-click Internet Options.
  8. Click the Programs tab.
  9. Click to select the Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser check box.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Start Internet Explorer and when you are prompted to make it the default browser, click Yes.
