W98 and Internet Gateway uninstall problem

By Hart - usenet poster

My desktop has W98SE and I connect to the internet with a
cable modem. I bought a laptop that has XP Home and a 54G
wireless network adapter. I then purchased a Linksys
Wireless-G broadband router. I installed the router onto
the desktop with no problem, but when I attempted to set
up the laptop to connect to the internet (by creating a
new network), it had me use the XP Home setup disk on the
desktop pc and now I have an Internet Gateway connection
on my task bar with no way that I can find to get rid of
the thing. There is a shortcut for it in
Programs/Accessories/Communications, but it isn't listed
in Install/Remove Programs so that I can uninstall it. I'm
having no success creating a network and need to get rid
of the Internet Gateway so I can try this from scratch
again. I'd appreciate any help you might be able to offer.

Barb, the Internet Gateway icon doesn't represent anything on your
computer. The Internet Gateway represents your router.

Running XP's Network Setup Wizard on 98 didn't install the Internet
Gateway. It installed "Universal Plug and Play" software on your
computer that allows it to see the an Internet Gateway if one exists
elsewhere on the network.

I'm not sure what your router's Internet Gateway icon does. When I
right click the Internet Gateway icon representing my router, it lets
me view the router's status or enable/disable the router's connection
to the Internet.

Here are some ways to delete the Internet Gateway icon:

1. Disconnect the router.

2. Disable the appropriate setting in your router's web interface. It
might be called "Internet Gateway", "Universal Plug and Play", "UPnP",
or something else.

3. Un-install the "Universal Plug and Play" software which allows Win
98 to see an Internet Gateway that exists on the network:

a. Go to Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup |
Communications.

b. Scroll down the list of components and un-check "Universal Plug and
Play".

c. Click OK to exit.

The Internet Gateway was installed by the XP Home system's
disk when I was attempting to get an internet connection
working. Though it uses the router, it was not installed
by the router. The Linksys people had me reset the router
and change the channel setting from 6 to 1 on it's web
setup page, then we enabled MAC cloning and entered the
address for my PC adapter card (found using winipcfg at
the DOS prompt). Once that was done, the Internet Gateway
was disconnected and the wireless is working between the
two computers.

I would prefer to delete the Internet Gateway altogether,
rather than have it sitting in my taskbar doing nothing,
but I'll attempt to ignore it if I have to.

The Internet Gateway is your broadband router. Clicking the icon lets
you monitor and control the router. There's no need to get rid of the
Internet Gateway, and I don't think that it will help, but you can if
you really want to: connect to the router's built-in web server and
disable it. See the router's documentation for details. It might be
listed as "Internet Gateway" or "Universal Plug and Play".
