I have a 3 year old GE Side by Side refrig GSS25JEMBCC. Seems to have stopped going to defrost cycle (lots of snow forming in the freezer around the ice maker output chute). Pulled the internal back freezer panel and saw the coil coated with ice, and heater at bottom never seemed to turn on. I belive this runs with an adaptive defrost system, I could not find a mechanical timer in the frig or the GE parts list. So I am guessing there is a problem with either the adaptive defrost board, heater, defrost thermostat, or some other thermostat. Sound correct? Any debug tips? Is there a way to force a defrost on this model (I see documents for other models on the internet but not this one yet)?
Might be able to eliminate the defrost heater and defrost thermostat by ohming them for continuityif the heater has continuity and the defrost thermostat ( when cold ) has continuity they should be ok. If they test bad, change and test the unit. Many/most of the electronic GE units cannot be put into defrost without buying some testing boards and such :(
on the back wall is a rectangular plate. it houses a low volt ciciut board. there is a three wire diconnect marked line, defrost and compressor. place a jumper wire from line to defrost. if the defrost unit is good you will see a spark. if so, replace board.

we have had this refrigerator for over 10 years and it has lost temperature and started to defrost about 7 times in about a year. each time I have emptied it and left it unplugged for 1-2 says and then plugged it in again but this time it did it again in about a week. would you suggest getting a new one or would this be worth getting a new one?

Icemaker quit dumping ice, a load is frozen in the tray and when I removed the rear panel, the top half of coils were cold but the bottom half is not. It appears the bottom part of the coil has a lead to the icemaker. Is this my issue and how do I fix it?
