Printing Problems with NEC 870

Printing to a NEC 870 laser printer is erratic.
Generally the first print job of the day either on
Wordperfect, Word or printing from the web will give a
page with no legible printing, the next time printing
the same page it may be in the largest type with 4 to 5
letters on the page. The third time it may print the
page correctly. I have checked for a new print driver on
the NEC website but it says use the one on the
installation CD. Any ideas or suggestions. Thanks in
