Question about Dell Dimension 4300 PC Desktop

My CD rom driver is bad and windows will not install a new one

My wife accidently downloaded Antivirus 360. I tried to get as much of it off the computer as possible. I am trying to download my Defender Pro, and now I cannot use my CDROM, nor my SONY USB DVD/CD DRX-820U. Both drivers show they may be corrupt. When I try and update them windows states that it cannot. I cannot find the original discs for either, am I completely stuck, or is there a way to fix without purchasing an eternal CDROM and installing my software that way?

You can go to the vendors website and download the drivers, however the drivers are apart of windows. try doing a system restore and go back before she put that nasty program in.

Two items on a single IDE ribbon cable require a master and a slave. The next step is to let BIOS know of the drive. Press F2 during boot and check. Look for it were other drives are, and there maybe a auto select / discovery option. It must show in BIOS, or there is no going forward.

If BIOS sees it and XP does not. Check Device Manager in Safe Mode by pressing F8 during boot. Right click My Computer > Manage. Select Device Manager > View > Show Hidden Devices. Now delete all DVD/CD-ROMs and reboot. Windows will say "New Hardware Found" and install. Walla CD-ROM in the house.

If none of this works. Test another cable, CD-ROM, or computer. Oh yea, virus protection. Do a thorough scan. This was a common problem back in the day.

1. Preparing before you begin
    1-1 Make sure that your computer has the necessary system requirements.

    * Windows XP Home Edition/Professional
    * Windows Vista (32 and 64-bit) Home basic, Home Premium, Ultimate, Business, Starter Edition

    * 300 MHz or higher processor
    * 256MB RAM
    * 180MB of available hard disk space

    1-2 Remove any other antivirus programs that you currently have installed.
    To remove them, click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove programs. In the list of current installed programs, click other antivirus or firewall programs, and then click Remove.

    1-3 Make sure that you can connect to the Internet, then close that window.

    1-4 Close all open programs on your computer.

2. Installing and activating Norton AntiVirus

2-1 Do one of the following:
If you install from a CD, insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive.
If you downloaded your copy of Norton AntiVirus, double-click the file that you downloaded.

2-2 In the opening panel, click Install Norton AntiVirus.

2-3 Read the License Agreement, type your Product Key if prompted, and then click I Agree.
If you do not accept the License Agreement, you cannot continue the installation.

2-4 In the Installation Options panel, review the options, and then click Next.

2-5 In the Pre-Install Scan panel, click Start Scan.
The scan takes a few minutes.

2-6 In the Installation Confirmation panel, click Next.

2-7 In the Activation panel, wait for the progress bar to stop, and then click Next.

2-8 If the Norton Account panel appears, do one of the following:
* If you currently have a Norton account, complete the Sign in to an existing Norton Account section.
* If you want to create a new Norton Account, complete the Create a Norton Account section.

2-9 Click Next.

2-10 In the Norton AntiVirus Installation Complete panel, review your subscription details, and then click Finish.

2-11 In the Welcome to LiveUpdate panel, click Next to begin checking for the latest product updates.

2-12 On the next LiveUpdate panel, review the list of available updates, and then click Next to begin the updates.
This process takes a few minutes.

2-13 On the final LiveUpdate panel, click Finish.
A system scan begins automatically. When the scan is complete, the Norton AntiVirus main window opens.

The driver for the CD ROM it is loading with windows when you instal the computer ..If the drive letter disappeared and it seams to be uninstalled in device manager it means it was attacked by a virus and even if you load the driver again it will do the same ..In this case you have to reinstall the operation system from the recovery source or from a boot-able disk ..

Husband's computer infected with "Antivirus Live"


Go to www.malwarebytes.org and download their anti-malware program. Put the program on a USB driver and then boot up the infected computer into "Safe Mode" by repeatedly pressing F8 during the intital boot up sequence. You'll be prompted to with a menu to start windows. Select Safe Mode and follow the prompts. Once started, insert the USB device and run the malwarebytes program. It should remove the worst of the problem and then once you're able to boot up normally, run a thorough scan with your antivirus software as well.

Brand new computer and i did not install the adobe it came with the computer Vista basic and i get the 1311 error message when i try to run adobe computer 1 day old !

When you try to install Adobe Acrobat 6, 7, 8, or 3D on Windows, the installer returns the error message "Error [1311, 1335 or 2350]. Source file not found: [drive name]:\ Adobe Acrobat [version]\data1.cab. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it." If you click Retry, the installer returns the error message "Cannot find the file Adobe Acrobat [version]\data1.cab."
Solution Perform one or more of the following solutions:
Solution 1: Check the Acrobat CD-ROM.

Make sure that the CD-ROM from which you are installing is free of dirt and debris. If necessary, clean the CD-ROM with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Solution 2: Temporarily disable anti-virus software, and then install Acrobat.

For instructions, see the documentation for the anti-virus software or contact the manufacturer.
Solution 3: Extract the compressed installation files, and then install Acrobat.

  1. Right-click the folder and choose Extract All.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. To install Acrobat, double-click the Setup.exe file located in the folder that contains the extracted files.
Solution 4: Uninstall the CD-ROM drive and let Windows redetect it, and then install Acrobat.

Deleted cd-rw/dvd-rom driver


I talked directly with HP about your problem. Unless you can find the driver in system32 or your windows installation disc, you will likely have to reinstall windows. Prepare a backup of all important files on that desktop though, because data loss is possible.
