Does anyone have any idea who did the drivers for NEC for the Superscript 660 Plus Win95-only laser printer? I'm a programmer and would love to get the source and try to port it to 98 and 2000. I have this nice paperweight sitting around now that 95 is long gone from my life! I know it's a long shot, but NEC won't supply new drivers for it and nobody's making any money on the source anymore, so maybe the company that developed it would "open-source" it. Seems a shame to toss a perfectly good printer!
I think it was a third party company called Destiny Technologies who did the drivers for the 660. I tried to to get info from both NEC and Adobe as I have the next model up, the 860. You can get this to work under W2K as a driver comes with W2K for it, unfortunately it emulates the HP using PCL, and in so doing so drops down from 600dpi to 300dpi, also it does not use any of the features of the printer (ie. PrintGear at all).

Cool, at least someone is interested.
But the 660 uses something that references SUMO, and I don't think it is the same program as PrintGear by Adobe. There is a sumo.dll file involved. I will have to load the drivers up and see if I can get anymore info from any of the installed files. I'll let you know what I find.

Hey Jim, I have a SuperScript 860 and it??s the same problem here. Ok, the Win95-Drivers work with Win98 and there is a NT 4.0-driver. But nothing for Win2k. All those PrintGear-Drives were written by Adobe, who developed PrintGear. But when you search the Adobe web site you won??t find any more information about PrintGear (there were sites at any time...). Seems to me as if Adobe has cancelled their engagement in PrintGear. But I wonder why they won??t release the specs so one could do the driver by himself! Maybe you can get some information from there?! This applies also to similiar devices from other manufacturers, Minolta and Xerox also did sell printers with PrintGear. When you download those drivers, you??ll see that they include all the same exe??s and only a few text files were changed (the names and product names replaced...). The printers I know are Minolta PagePro 8L and the Xerox DocuPrint P12. These companies also told me they will never release a Win2k-driver :-( Please let me know if you were sucsessful and got some information from Adobe! I??ve tried to write a simple graphics driver (write a bitmap to the printer, so you don??t have to do the whole processing, only raw bitmap output). I was able to find out the document header and some of the compression methods used by printgear in transmitting bitmaps to the printer. But I was never able to print more than a few smileys, and every time I send my own site to the printer I got an error (all lamps lighting...). One day I canceled the project for a while at least. Let me know if you think my informations will be helpful - maybe we could work together?! cu Sebastian "Jim Weatherly" <jimw_ ...

The drivers are more than just drivers as I understand it. All the rendering is done in software. The 95 drivers are supposed to work under 98 but I have had consistent trouble with several different machines. They were never intended for NT or 2000.
