Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a KitchenAid Supra refrigerator, KSRS25F, it is now 8 years old. Yesterday it lost ability to freeze and cool. Both fans are working fine, no frost on coils, and cleaned bottom coils. Is this the compressor? And are we looking at BIG $$ to fix?

Yes this would be the compressor and they run with a technician roughly 600 dollars. There are two things that will cause a Refrigerator not to cool or freeze, the coils being clogged or the compressor is shot. In this case the compressor is gone. Better to just get a new frig

We moved our Kitchenaid refrigerator down the steps to the basement using a dolly and now its running constantly.

I can't think of any reason moving it would cause that problem. How are your door seals? Are both fans(evaporator fan in freezer and condenser fan at compressor)working? Did you give it 24 hours for temps to stabilize?

Refrigerator/freezer stopped cooling/freezing yesterday. Lights are on inside and 8 hear the fan running in the freezer but no cold air. Tried powering off and also unplugging to see if it would reset...

possible failure of defrost mechanism causing ice to build up behind back of freezer preventing air flow into freezer and fridge. Try turning it off for enough time for ice to melt if cause.
if this is issue the repair man will need the ice half melted to be able to test the thermistor that senses the ice buildup.

Yesterday we had a very strong odor in the house that could be described similar to bleach or ammonia; it burned the nose, was stronger downstairs and we lost the ability to smell it after some time unless...

It sure sounds like the coolant leaked out. It's tough to decide whether to repair it or replace it. Refrigerators can easily last twenty or thirty years, or longer. On the other hand, if you call in a repairman you run the risk of it being a serious problem that would cost several hundred dollars. If it were me I would opt for repair, after checking to find someone with reasonable prices.
Good luck,

My KitchenAid KBRS22K bottom mount refrigerator is eight years old. Was working fine, but now the refrigerator does not cool, but the freezer stays cold. The fan seems to work and the coils have been...

the problem here is the defrost element is not coming on, the problem is the control board in the fresh food compartment is defective and not telling the element to defrost. Therefore your cooling coils are impacted with ice which keeps freezer cold, and sensor in freezer says everything is ok and therefore sends nothing to refrigerator. Replace the defrost control board, Thaw out the cooling coils in freezer, and your back in business

Freeze works fine, food side at 50 degrees.

Is there a fan that blows air over the cooling coils in the freezer? Not sure if side-by-side fridges have this. This was the reason for my top freezer / bottom fridge. Air was not being blown around the freezer and down into the fridge.

Freezer stayed cold but upper compartment wouldn't. Freeze started having problems with staying cold. I just paid $377 to get the two year old evaporate fan replaced. It is located inside the frig behind the panel in the freezer compartment. It took about 15 minutes. Seems this part is part of the evaporator system but not covered by anything other than the first one year warranty. Problem solved but what a ripoff from Kitchenaid.
