Processor upgrade for Tabor 2 Gateway part #...

By 2Pansy - usenet poster

After doing some research and upgradeing to a P3 450
I found an interesting issue about the motherboard.
A 450 processor uses 2 volts. The processor uses VID pins to automaticially
program motherboard to the required motherboard voltage.
A 700 processor (Intel OEM 700) uses 1.7 volts.
I dropped in the 700 and it seems to be extremely stable.
Intel says the board supports a 450.Gateway tech said the 700 should pose
no problem.
MB 4M4PBOX1bios up to P21
Gateway will not sell me a new board..
Any issues I should look for.All hardware running great.
Thanks...Harry
So if I understand correctly the processor will tell the motherboard that it
needs 1.7 volts and not 2 volts through the VID pins
I have the same problem Post a new problem

All the processor does is request a voltage - it does not
check to see that it is that voltage being delivered. If the board
can't deliver 1.7V, the CPU is running at 2.0.

what's the part number for your board?
When i upgraded my bios to P21, the BIOS could support CPU speeds upto
800Mhz (if i recall correctly).. But alot of people say the board can only
support upto a PIII450 due to voltage issues.

Have you measured that the board is delivering 1.7V to the core?
The issue with these boards is that although the processor may
request 1.7V, the board's voltage regulator can't deliver it - you may
be driving 2.0V though the core (in which case the processor will probably
run just fine - until it burns out from overvoltage).
