You just need to re-enter the passkey you set-up on the router to re-connect.

If you don't know this, go into the router configuration page (you may need to use a physical network cable to do this) and reset the passkey to a new one.

I am trying to hook up wireless router, Desktop has cable. Do not want desktop to be wireless just laptop.

Login to http://192.168.1.1 from your desktop PC. This should bring your to a router logon config page.
The default login and password is usually "admin/admin" or "Administrator/Password" keep trying a few different login/password combos until you get in. "Caps/Lowercase"..etc.

Once you get in you can set the WEP/WPA security key for the router. Then apply the key you generate to your laptop.

The security you have installed on your system is restricting access to the router. Whatever security you are using, you need to add the router's ip address i.e. 192.168.1.1 in the exception list.

How do I hook up both a laptop and a desktop to the internet?

Hello;
This is a quick setup for you, depending on the model of router you have. If this is a new router follow these steps

  1. Unplug the power to your Cable or DSL Modem
  2. Take the Ethernet Cable that goes from your modem and plug it in to the WAN or INTERNET port on the back of the router
  3. Plug your Desktop PC in to one of the remaining LAN outlets.
  4. Plug the power to your modem back in and wait 90 seconds
  5. Plug the power to your router in and wait another 90 seconds
  6. On your desktop computer open your browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) and try one of these websites
  • http://192.168.1.1
  1. You will be prompted for a username and password. Depending on the make and model of router this can vary. This site can help you figure this out: http://www.routerpasswords.com
  2. Once you are in your router you are looking for a Wireless Option. On this tab you will need to set your Network Name or SSID. This will be the name you use to locate your wireless network later.
  3. Next, you will want to look for a wireless security tab. This allows you to setup your security. Options include WEP and WPA encryption. If Available, choose WPA2
  4. Next, it will ask you for a pass phrase or password to protect your wireless connection, this should be tough to guess.
  5. Save all the changes and go to your laptop
  6. On your laptop, beside the time in the bottom corner look for the icon with two monitors.
  7. Right click on the monitors and choose connect to a network
  8. Double click the network you named in step 2. You will be prompted for your password, enter the password you chose in step 4.
That should be it. If you continue to have difficulties please respond with the make and model of wireless router you have and I'll provide you with a more specific help.

Make sure that your computer is getting a valid IP address from the router. If your wireless network is secured, you might as well consider checking the wireless settings.
