HP Photosmart 7760 Won't Print

By Janice - usenet poster

I have installed, unininstalled and reinstalled this
printer several times following the HP installation
proceedure and under the direction of HP and Gateway. I
have also downloaded the latest drivers from HP. I have
deleted all traces of the installation including all usb
drivers. The HP program says in installed successfully and
the "setup hardware device" has said it "product connected
successfully, only it does NOT PRINT!! It keeps selecting
LPT 1, I beleive it should be selecting a USB port. When I
pull down the printer port menu all the ports installed
with the program: DOT4, DOT4PRINT, DOT4USB & USB all say
(unknow local port). I did further research and found that
the USB port in installed as HPZID412.inf
(windows/system32/drivers/HPZID412.sys). HP nor Gateway
has been able to help me with this problem. Can any one
else??

Hi Tom, Thanks for trying to help. I made the mistake of
giving HP another try for the last few days. I do have a
start up disk, but am unsure as to what the command is
that starts the bios update. I have two .com(s) on the
floppy: gw2kboot.com & amiflash.com. Reading the "read-me
file, my guess would be amiflash.com. I am pasting the
file so you can read for yourself. I appreciate the time
you are giving me and hope we can get this printer to
PRINT.

Do you have a Windows "Startup" disk? Try putting that in the floppy, start
the machine. when it has finished starting and you see some text on the
screen, the DOS prompt, and a flashing cursor, remove the start-up floppy.
Next, insert the floppy with the BIOS update. Now, type the command that
starts the BIOS update.

Plan B.
Open a DOS window. Insert a blank floppy. Type

format /s a: and press enter.

After the format is finished, copy the update files to the floppy.
Reboot the machine.

If all that is useless, let me know the www site for the update. I'll check
on it and let you know.

Let us know.

Thanks for taking the time to respond!! There is a BIOS
update at gateway and I tried to download without success.
I followed the directions exactly but when I try to
restart with the floppy in Drive A I get the msg "Non-
system disk or disk error". I also looked in the BIOS and
the "USB Legacy keyboard support" was disabled. I enabled
it, uninstalled & reinstalled the software again. Still no
luck. Maybe I need the upgrade but have no ideas on how to
make it work. If you have any suggestions I would be glad
to hear them. Thanks again.

I suppose that HP has already had you download their utility to totally
remove the printer and start from scratch. If not, please do this

Make sure that you then do the installation exactly as instructed for your
printer. If the instructions say not to connect it until after installing
the drivers, then do this. If you are supposed to connect it first, then do
this.

Also, disconnect all other USB devices while installing the printer. I find
that having other devices connected sometimes seems to cause the device
installation to fail. I've found this most commonly with printers and
scanners.

Also, make sure that the printer is not connected to a hub but directly to
the computer when you do the installation. I've found that once the printer
is installed and working correctly, plugging it into a hub and adding other
devices does not seem to affect it.
