Question about Macally 1 Bay phr-250a (PHR-100A) USB 2.0 External Drive Case

PHR-100A Is not working anymore

I have an external hardrive conected to the Hi-Speed USB2.0 P
HR-100A. It has been working fine for me up until now. I pluged it in and Im getting a screen that says found new hardware, windows needs to install driver software for your 24. I click locate and install. Then it tells me to insert the disk that came with my 24. I dont have a disk so I click the dont have disk show me other options. Then it gives me the option to check for solutions. when i click on it it says windows can not find driver software for your device. It also tells me if I know the manufacture i could check the website for support so i did I downloaded the driver with the on and off button and when i go to browse to make it download the driver it dont reconize it. What can I do to fix this problem?

    I have this same problem. The external drive, PHR-100A, no longer is recognized by my computer, which tells me I need a driver. These external drives seem to really ****. Any help would be appreciated.

Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.

Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".

If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.

Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.

Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.

  1. The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
  2. The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
  3. The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.

The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.

The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.

A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.

Leave it connected to your computer and try a restart.
If the folder is still showing as empty, power down the computer then disconnect the external drive.
Power on the computer and connect the external hard drive to a different usb port.
I had this exact problem with a 1000 Gb external drive that was full of movies and music. I thought it had all been lost .. After 2-3 days and repeated attempts of restarts and power-downs/different usb ports it suddenly was recognised again and has worked perfectly since

Computer won't recognize external usb hard drive


try it on another computer if that dosent work you should
reformat your computer but first backup all your data by putting your another internal hardrive on your computer and move all your files you need to the empty hardrive and after that take the hardrive with all your stuff in it off the computer and then reformat the hardrive which the external hardrive does not work on and install a new operating system then put the other hardrive with all your stuff back on your computer and transfer your stuff into the hardrive with a operating system then try the external hardrive

you can burn all your stuff into a CD or a DVD
OR
you can put all your stuff into FlashDrives and then after you reformat the hardrive with an operating system put your stuff back into the computer and after that the external hardrive should work

How you manage to drive to work if the car did not start after replacing the 100A fuse? I'm confused. You may want to check the 15A fuse for the computer inside the car and check the rest in the same area for possible damage.

If it used to read it, but doesnt anymore, could be a sign of a hardware failure. If another computer reads it, then it is probably a driver issue. Try to turn the power on, then insert the USB cable into the computer.

Should external hard drives be defragmented?


It is good praktice to defragment also external hard drives but main problem with external hard drives is type of conection with computer (usb, firewire or SCSI) that will determinate speed, especialy when you work with video.

Shut down your computer and unplug the device. Then turn your computer back on, log in, wait for it to finish loading, then connect the drive and turn it on.

HELP MY HARD DRIVE HAS GONE!


Ok to understand this , you dropped a 1 TB hard-drive external hard drive on the floor? Well considering that it is a external, the cases in most externals are meant to take a beating as well as the hard-drive it self. There is two possiblities I can think of, what could of happened. When the Hard-Drive hit the floor, it could of is disconnected the connection on the hard-drive itself inside the casing, which you will have to pop it open and reseat it. Or the hardrive, arm inside the hard-drive it self snapped or is misplaced, which is unrepairable. Open up the casing and looking for the hardrive it self. Towards the back of the hard-drive is where the connection of th drive is, it is eather sata or orginal set up with his pins based. Take the connection off and put it back on and see if that works, if it didnt, best advise would be is take in in and have the drive tested, see if its still operable.
