Question about Magic Chef MCBR170 Compact Refrigerator

1 Answer

Hole I used a flat-head screwdriver and a hammer to defrost the icemaker part of my Magic Chef 1.7 refrigerator. I accidentally punched a hole into the side of the icemaker compartment. I immediately heard a whistling sound coming from the whole that lasted for a good while and then stopped. Now my refrigerator does not cool anymore. I wonder if it is out of freon...and if so, how do I put freon back in it. I know that I can patch the hole up with epoxy.

You have punctured one or more of the refrigerant lines. Your chances of fixing this are slim, but if you can find the hole, you can solder it shut, then pressurize the unit with new refrigerant. The former you might be able to do yourself. The latter will require you to get a repairman who has the necessary refrigerent and valves to re-load the unit. I would guess the cost of repair is probably more than the unit is worth.

Have magic chef mccf7wbx defrosted was frosted over from being left open. Plugged back in. Would not freeze. Compressor seems to run. Replaced start relay. Did not help.

are you sure it was fully defrosted b4 you plugged back in?
How did you defrost it? I assume you did not chip away at the ice with something sharp an punch a hole in the copper tubing.

The top frezer fan is working and the bottom part is real hot and the freezer is working partially what seems to be the problem???

You need to look in the bottom cieling for a hole the size of a ballpoint pen. Take a small screwdriver(flat head) insert and turn clockwise ( it will only trun one way). You hear a clicking until the frige part turns off (fan and compressor). This is the defrost timer. It may run a few more months but they should cost less than most parts. If you turn it off or unplug and leave the freezer door open, it will thaw;then, will work about 10 days. Goodluck!

I have Magic chef Model # CTB1923ARW. We find water all over the refrigerator section. This unit does not have Ice maker

Remove the food and the ice maker from the freezer ( if equiped ) . Remove the rear freezer panel . Using a hair dryer , start in the middle , below the coils , defrosting , until you see the drain hole . Use hot water to help defrost the hole . Once water starts going thru the hole , use a small hose inserted into the hole , and blow thru , to remove any unseen debris in the drain line . Use an ALUMINUM or COPPER solid wire , 14-16 guage , with the insulation completely off , and insert one end into the drain hole as far as possible without any force . Lightly hook the other end over the glass rod (defrost heater) , above the hole . When refrig goes into defrost , the heat will transfer from the heater , to the wire , keeping the hole from freezing up again .

Freezer quit working. The power is on. But no sound of compressor.

At the top on the control box , there is a hole about 1/2 inch in diameter . Find this hole and use a flat head screwdrive to insert and turn slightly . This is the defrost timer . The refrig could be stuck in defrost . If turning slightly and refrig starts , replace the defrost timer . If doesn't start , TAP on the thermostat knob and see if refrig starts . If so , replace the thermostat .

Refrigerator not making ice or getting cold

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

Your symtom comment that it is barely getting cold leads me to think the problem is in the automatic defrosting of the refrigerator.

Your unit has a mechanical defrost timer. It is item 6 of this link:

If you look at the panel all you will see of the defrost timer is 2 raised / tapered tabs that would only allow you to rotate those tabs in one direction.

Use a flat bladed screwdriver with a good blade or a rather wide flat ended kitchen utensil to rotate the defrost time until the compressor shuts off. That is the beginning of the defrost cycle. Leave the unit sit for about 1 hour and see if it performed the defrost cycle and restarted the compressor.

If the compressor did not restart.... there are other components of the defrost circuit that have failed.
Those components can be any one of the following:

1. The defrost timer itself.
2. The 60 deg bi-metal thermostat
3. The defrost heating element
4. A wiring problem to any of the above

If the unit did not defrost at all.... what you can do is perform a manual defrost by unplugging the unit, emptying the contents of the freezeer section and placing a fan blowing into the freezer section for just over 2 hours. This WILL make a WATER MESS so be ready to tend to the drips with rags and a mop.

After that 2 hour manual defrost reload the freezer and plug the unit back in. The temps should return to normal in about 4 hours.

If the manual defrosting corrects your no ice and warm fresh food problem then you for sure have an automatic defrosting problem.

One thing to note is.... if the evaporator fan in the freezer compartment is not running you will have a warm fresh food compartment and no ice. If the fan is NOT running and the compressor IS running the evaporator fan has failed.

The wiring diagram for your Refrigerator can be found here:

Magic Chef refridgerator with small built in freezer model#MCBR 980W. Defrosting instructions unclear; red button suppose to be pushed in for defrosting the small freezer, How is it suppose to actually...

I just defrosted my cooler and looked at the manual. It says that you should do it when the ice is only a 1/4 inch thick. Then it will do it without any effort. Well of course i waited till it was about 1 1/2 inches thick. The defrost button does help though. i pushed it and waited 3 hours and that loosened up the ice around the box. Then used an ice pick, flat head skrew driver, and a painters 5 in 1 tool. I cleaned the inside of the freezer fairly eaisly and let the rest of the defrost process clean the top and the sides of the box which i couldn't reach.

Refridgerator leaking water

You will have to check the defrost drain in the freezer by removing either the back or bottom of the freezer . Thaw ice if found in freezer and check to see if the drain hole is clear. Do not use anything to chip at the ice. Clear ice by warming it with warm water or possibly a hair dryer.
