Question about EdgeStar Portable Air Conditioner Heater
When using this model as an air conditioner, it is a dream: it runs perfectly, and everything gets to a very crisp, cool temperature without any wetness. The exhaust hose vents to the outdoors nicely. In the winter (I live in New England), it would be absolutely catastrophic to keep a window open - even 4" - in order to vent the EdgeStar when using it as a heater. I cannot imagine that this is even a good idea! So, I've been trying to use the EdgeStar's heater, and it doesn't work. No error messages. It just keeps reading the same temperature that it was when I first turned it on, no matter what I set it to, and the air does not blow any warmer than when I first turn it on, even if I leave it on for hours. What is wrong with my heater? Do I actually and ridiculously need to vent a heater outside?! Help!!!

There are 3 possibilities beginning with the most likely problem
1) If your heater heats up for a few minutes and then quits, chances are there is a blockage in the air flow, check for dust and grime blocking the air intake coarse filter , airgun blow to clear accumulated dust and otherwise clean the coarse filter .
2) If the heater fan blows but there is no warm air, the heating element needs renewal ( this happens very rarely)
3)If the fan stalls and the heater heats up and the thermostat kicks in, then this will be not be a DIY job. This is least likely as you said the air cooler works.

The blink is an indication of overheating. Have you cleaned the filters? Have you made sure the exhaust tube doesn't have any kinks in it? Are you using a mains plug that has a grounding connector and doesn't overheats?
If all are how they are supposed to be then the compressor is failing - more precisely its starting capacitor: when heated it starts to short. The unit will have to be opened and the capacitor replaced - it's a special capacitor specifically made for that, you will need to get an exact replacement. Do not keep using the unit in this condition: the capacitor will eventually fail for good and it will fry the compressor in the process, killing the unit.
If you don't have the minimum experience required to do the job safely don't take any chases and call a pro.
