I have the same problem. I have a satellite a105-s1712. I purchased 2 x 1g 533Mhz DDR2 sticks from 1st choice memory (their website provided the memory exactly for the model number of the laptop). When I replace the 512 with the single 1g or both, the laptop just appears to try to start a couple of times and then shuts down. I have also instaled the latest Bios (2.3) as instructed by Toshiba website. Still nothing. The 512 that works fine with the laptop has the following on it: 512MB DDRII 533FSB on one side, and 512MB 2Rx16 PC2-4200S-444-12-A3 on the other.
    Appriciate any help.

Look on the RAM stick and tell me the speed and type of RAM that you have..for instance 133MHz DDR or 266MHz SDRAM..etc..

I have the same issue with my laptop. I have not been able to get the laptop to accept 2gb of memory yet, but I did find something that works. If you put your 512mb memory that works in the laptop and then add a 1gb stick in the second slot it works. Or at least it did for me. It's better than nothing. I am still trying to figure out how to get it up to the 2gb max. Will add a solution if I figure it out.

Hey, I actually found out the problem after doing some reasearch. You probably saved money on your 2g cards. They are not fully compatible even though the vendors claim that they are. If you get your memory from the maker of your laptop you will not have an issue. Kingston is also a safe choice. All these OEM cards seem to have problems. There is tons of people with the same problem. I never bothered to re-order and go though the whole RMA process. I think 1.5 g is not all that much slower than 2g. But for the next laptop (dell) i order the upgrade kit from dell and had no issues.

Can I upgrade my acer 5315 memory to 2GB with two 1GBs in two slots or I can put two 2GB slots adding up to 4GB? Thanks

You can upgrade it to 2GB (MAX) if icon_detail.gifMemory Type: DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 2GB
Slots: 2
Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.

Hope this helps.

Laptop max RAM is 2GB. Had 512mb single stick. Won't accept upgra

the problem is the frequency ...you have to set into bios on the memory to read it on the lower one..so it will read both ....also if it is booting with both on but not showing into the windows properties..you have to reinstall the operating system to do that ...In-fact this is a standard procedure when you upgrade the Ram memory ..even if it reads it all ok ..you still have to reinstall...
You was kinda messy in explanations and I didnt quite understand what kinda memory you put in and it do not boot at all..but remember that this laptop will not read anything bigger than !G on one slot ..and ..if it reads them separately ...but when you put them together it is not even starting on reading devices..than you have to insert them and short the bios to reset all to the factory defaults with the memory in ...in that moment the bios settings will force to the lowest frequency ..in this case the one from the 512 unit ..

Would a 2x 1gb ram upgrade be better for a toshiba a105-s2236 or would a 1x2gb ram upgrade be better

That computer supports dual channel memory. You would be better to install memory in matching pairs. (2x1GB) On the hardware page of my website www.rfcomputer.biz there is a link to Crucial memory. Just put in your make and model and they will make recomendations

Can I upgrade memory to only one gb of memory or install 2 512 mb on a toshiba satellite m35x series

Looking at the specs, the max is 2gb for your Toshiba. According to this website, its only a 256mb ddr sdram. So my guess is you only have 1 slot for the ram. I'd go with a 2gb ram if you can afford it, 1gb just don't cut it in todays technology.

I believe its the PC2700 model, so find a 1gb or 2gb PC2700 @ 333mhz and you should be set.

What kind of memory can I put in my toshiba satellite a105-s1712

DDR II SDRAM.
You'd have to look at your manual to find out maximum memory.

Memory upgrade problem

I did some checking on your model laptop and it says that the maximum supported amount of ram is 2gb (2 x 1gb) and so since the slots are made for 1gb max each then thats all they will see even with bigger 2gb chips installed

I put two 2GB RAM in my memory slot and only one is registering, so instead of 4GB RAM, I have 2GB. Why is this and what can I do to get the full 4GB?

ok i checked on your model and it says 2gb RAM max and so it is probably seeing both chips but only seeing 1gb each since that is what the slot is made for..
But to be totally sure you might wqant to check the bios and see what it says since some bios will sometimes give more details as to how many chips are installed.
or take out one chip and turn the computer back on and see if it shows 1gb or 2gb if it shows 1gb with one 2gb chip then you will know that the slot wont read more than 1gb.

Page 43 of this manual seems to have the best documentation on memory for this machine. I saw a 2GB max in another document and this shows the biggest module as 1GB. I would believe that infers a pair.
