Question about Garmin Forerunner 405 Handheld GPS Receiver

405 frozen My Garmin 405 has frozen. I stopped it at the end of the run but when I got it home it wouldn't download through the ANT agent. When I tried to change it I realised it was completely locked. I hadn't locked the Bezel, so it isn't that. It's been about 4 hours now and I can't do a thing with it. I am desperate. I live in Switzerland and bought this in England so I can't even take it back to the shop

On the way to the woods for my usual run round with the dog. Got there and realised my 405 had frozen on the date/time screen. Went for my run anyway hoping that it would come back to life. No joy. Got back and tried sticking it back on the charger to shock it back into life. No joy. Checked this site and followed advice I found "Push in both buttons and hold for 30 seconds". Joy. Its come back to life. Thanks for sorting me out guys. Shame I'll have to do the run again now!

I've had the problem upon occasion as well. It was really bad before I found this solution when it'd occur at the beginning of a run!

Also if you're at home you can just let the battery wear down and that'll unlock it as well. The runs will still be in there when you recharge it later for downloading.

    Aloha.

Thanks for the solution guys. This happened to me before the bike ride. After the force re-boot, the time was correct. There must be some strange combination we hit to force the watch into this frozen or stand by state.

Watch was frozen with same time and date.

    Thanks.

I,ve been training for a charity run for months with my 405, loving it, but then this morning, race day the watch froze on time & date, I could not sort the problem out for fear of missing the start of the race!!!! I had to grab a crappy old sports watch to use which obviously wdn't give me any of the juicey race info I would have loved to download and mull over!! Tonight I have followed the 'hold the 2 buttons for approx 30 secs' and it WORKS!! Thankyou so much whoever suggested this. Good news, did run 3 mins faster than last years time :-)

I held both buttons in for about 30 seconds, as someone else had suggested. finally the screen went blank and then it came back as normal.

Try holding both buttons in for 10 seconds. That resets the watch. It worked for me.

Unsuccesful installation firmware 2.30 to 2.50

I had a similar problem. After a few attempts I was able to update the firmware to version 2.50. This is what I did:
1. Close the ANT Agent application by right clicking on the icon next to the clock and selecting Exit.
2. Reset the Forerunner 405. Mine was frozen on the LOADER screen. I held both buttons for a few seconds and released them when the rebooting process started.
3. Open the ANT Agent application and then go to the GARMIN webpage to download the update. Make sure you have the latest ANT Agent version.
4. The update process started and ended in about 2 minutes. Then it started again and lasted anothe 9 minutes.
5. The watch reboots with the new firmware version but retains all data amd customs settings.
Good luck.

Updated firm ware on 405

Make sure you have the latest ANT version.
Remove the pending firmwire program that wants to be transfered to the forerunner. (right-click + select delete)
Reset the watch (hold both buttons for 6 seconds, lift upper button, hold lower botton for another 3 seconds)
Then start all over again.
This fixed the problem for me.

Turn on the GPS. The forerunner will automatically sync time and date. Make sure the DST is switched to auto. I had the same problem and researched for the answer....which led me here. Turning on my GPS sync'd time and date for me. I hope this helps

Cant install Garmin Connect software

reboot the computer in safe mode. (HIT F8 during the startup) then after the computer loads put the ANT stick in the USB slot and it will then be recognized.

remove it and then reboot normally. Now simply reinsert the ANT stick after starting the ANT agent.

worked like a charm

enjoy

MY Garmin 405 wont download data. It make the connection and gets to the tarnsfer point then "transfer failed. I've one route downloaded last week but none since. I tried: resetting both...

I got the same issue and it was because of a software update to ANT+ agent being not compatible with the 405.
here is what I got from Garmin Support.
This solved my problem:
There is currently an issue that has been identified with the latest
version of the ANT agent where it will not transfer data to the computer
from a 405cx. To resolve this please follow these steps
1. If the device has paired it will need to be removed. Right Click on
the ANT agent, select Device Settings then click Remove Device.
2. Right Click the ANT agent and select Exit to close the ANT agent
3. Go to the Control Panel, select Add / Remove Programs and uninstall
the ANT agent.
4. Reboot the computer
5. Download the previous version of the ANT agent from http://www8.garmin.com/software/GarminANTAgent_221.exe
Run this file once it has downloaded
7. Turn on the pairing on the watch ? to do this go to Menu > Settings
> ANT+ > Computer > Pairing (on).
8. Enable pairing on the computer - right click on the ANT agent icon
and select Pair With New Devices > Enabled (this may already be enabled)
The Forerunner and computer should now pair, please be aware that it can
take several minutes for the computer to find the watch.
