Question about Western Digital Passport 160GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Black
When I connect my Passport 160, my laptop, running vista, reads the passport and shows the amount of available space. I can open the properties window and check all of the Passport information, but it won't allow me to open it to view files. When I try to open it I get a message at the top left of the window saying computer (not responding), then when I try to close out of My Computer I get a warning window saying, Windows Explorer not responding. I've had the drive for about six months and it has worked fine until 2/7/09.
Before deciding if you have to check your computer or the disk, you might want to try this pasport on another laptop. If the same problem occurs, change the USB cable with a new (short) one and see if the problem is still there. If it is, then the drive is fried. You may want to take the disk out of the passport, hook it onto a desktop system using the sata bus of the drive and try recover programs like recuva or similar to retrieve the data.

Unfortunately, these drives are not made to be dropped.
It sounds like it was damaged by the drop which could have rendered the read/write heads inoperable or mis-aligned.
Contact Western Digital for a warranty replacement.

No NO , WD is an excellent company as of 2004 , excellent products from them , if you wanna complain rag on seagate SATA drives hahaha they decided to dissable S.M.A.R.T. technology on their drives , yuck !
if the drive stopped working like that all the sudden , USE YOUR WARRENTY and RMA the drive back to the compay , get them to give you an RMA number , make up any sad story as long as the drive is still under warrenty , now they may ask you to pay for the new drive they send , but thats just untill they verify your old one is dead , then they'll refund the money back to your bank account.
which is totaly reasonable and protects them financialy , anybody would do the same.
You'te not alone , many many many DIFFERENT external drives are working one day and not working the next , it has alot to do with the batch , a particular batch of drives may be defective and nobody knows about it till it happens.... so please don't be real upset at maxtor or any others , but you can deffinately rag on seagate hahaha if just for their taking away the SMART drive diagnostics from their SATA drives .. we'll get you seagate Muhahaha we want our diagnostic tools because we're hardware monkies lol
so my advice is don't fight this too much , and RMA the drive back to the company if you still have warrenty power ...
they do have data recovery service , that may cost you more money , but you must decide what the data is worth to you , and maybe they will even get your data back for you if the drive was/is still under warrenty ,
always use your warrenty powers when you can.

Does you drive make any sounds like these?
If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it.
If not - try to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer to recover your files.
