Question about Gateway 450ROG Notebook

Gateway laptop 450ROG freezes up after it gets hot & screen frzs

My laptop freezes after about 5 minutes of use after the screen begins to fizzle. Looks like static on screen but then computer freezes.  I've tried to reboot several times but it freezes up before start up screen. It seems as though the fan is trying to cool the computer but it also freezes on the "ON" position so it keeps on running continuously. I'm confused as to what is wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

This definitely sounds like a heat problem. The system fan should cool it, but there may be a lot of dirt in the heat sink or along the path that the fan blows air. The first thing I would try is to get a can of canned air and blow it into all the vents under and on the side of the computer. If it is dusty, keep your face away.

You didn't say, but if you let the system cool down for a while (maybe 15 minutes or so) and start it up again and the same thing happens, it['s definitely a heat issue.

I reinstalled winxp sp3 on a gateway 450 rog. I was able to install all the drivers except the network controller and it also won't recognize the wireless adapter, any thoughts or ideas?

I had the same problem.
The "Network Controller" in my case had to do with the wireless network driver on my 450ROG.
None of the drivers that are available for 450ROG on the Gateway Support site worked correctly.
Here's what I did to solve the problem:
1. Flip the computer over. 2. On the back, you may see a little module that says "Fitted with Intel WM3B2100 802.11b". That's the built-in wireless network card (had no idea this computer had one, I inherited it). 3. Go to the Intel support site:http://downloadcenter.intel.com/ 4. Do a search for the "WM3B2100" driver. 5. Download and install the driver.
Fixed it for me!
Full info about the Gateway 450ROG is available at: http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Gateway/450ROG/3501353sp66.shtml This helped get me on the right track.

Gateway 450ROG screen went dark

Try using a can of compressed air and blowing out all the nooks and cranies. I did this and it worked for mine. Haven't had a problem since doing this. Let me know if you need more help.

Laptop screen very dark

the screen is not a sealed unit... and the backlight and the lcd bulb can both be changed out...
I do it on a daily basis....

It is way cheaper to change out the lcd bulb than it is to replace the lcd display panel... Way CHEAPER

the results are the same

This could be the inverter, or screen cable. Try replacing the cable first.

It could be that the cooling fans were both faulty, or the thermostat on the motherboard could also be at fault.
In either case it would need to be investigated by a engineer as it would be impossible to tell with out seeing the unit.

Your son may have solved your problem. You will be amazed at how much dust can accumulate inside a laptop. I clean mine out at least once a week. The drop in temp is suprising! Please report back if that solved it.

Gateway 450ROG Heating Up, Fan Constantly On, Screen Distortions

Ursula56,
If you paid them to fix it and they didn't, complain to the manager. Bring the fan to his attention. Software wont cause that kind if problem, unless its the video driver, which in your case it doesnt mess up when you first start it up, so thats not it. You will at least get your money back. You are right about the heat it will cause a lot of problems, because its size.
Please let me know how you make out. I hate seeing people get screwed.
