Do i need to change my harddisk?

I formatted my HP pavilion using UBUNTU. Then i tried to install XP however it says that it is not able to detect my hard disk while insatlling the . i do not know if my hard disk has crashed or some minor problem which can be fixed?

I also tried the laptop to self check the hard disk. however that too failed. the steps were after switching on > F10> diagonostic> detect hard disk. And it says the status as failed.

So do i need to change my hard disk as i do not know if it has crashed?

UBUNTU is a version Linux its formatting is different than Windows. If you are trying to setup a dual boot system (ability to boot linux or windows) my suggestion is that you partition the HDD install windows on one partition and then windows on the other. or just use seperate HDD. >>>>
If you just want windows installed low level format the HDD and windows should be able to recognize the drive. >>>>
you can low level format using POWERMAX - download and burn to cd >>> powermax4.09.iso go to http://digilander.libero.it/YorkOne/powermax/
>>>> the cd will be bootable just pop it in and reset

Good luck dont forget to RATE :]

Hello,

It sounds like UBUNTU formated your hard drive where xp does not reconized the drive. When you go into BIOS setting, do you see your hard listed? If so, you should be able to put a clean install of XP to the drive. When you start the install, you must select REFORMAT drive and install XP. If this still fails, you may need to fdisk your drive first using DOS command and reinstall XP. Let us know if you incounter any more problems after doing this. Good Luck.

Hey,
What u need to do first is go to bios - check for the tab tool or
Diagnostics - check wethere u can run a hard drive self test check for the results , if u get error 1-07 or 1-08 or any error then the hard drive has gone bad, if it gives u error cannot find hard drive then u need to reseat the hard drive.
The hard drive compartment is at the bottom of the Notebook , a compartment with 3 circular disks placed one over the other.
After u have removed the cover , u will find a black stirp which u can pull and the hdd will come out with it put it back again and then check in bios if it is getting detected under tools or Diagnostics, if yes then put the cd for xp in and keep tapping the ESC key on the keyboard ,it will give u boot option choose CD DVD Drive and press enter .

Reformating starts.
( If hard drive is not getting detected even after reseating then hardware issue with laptop needs repaire .. harddrive connectors have gone bad.)

You cannot see HD because there are no apropriate SATA drivers included in windows XP CD. So you need to create custom windows XP installation CD

To install windows XP in that laptop u will need to create custom windows XP CD, how will you do that:

  1. Download nlite from http://www.nliteos.com/
  2. Download drivers for that laptop
  3. Download service pack 3 for windows XP
  4. Install nlite for windows XP and run
  5. Follow instructions and include SP3 for XP, all the drivers for laptop and create ISO Image
  6. Burn ISO Image
  7. Install Windows XP
  8. Good Luck

Im using hp dv6700t laptop,i want to install xp on my laptop

Your laptop has a SATA hard drive and windows XP doesn't recognize those drives cause the operating system came out before those drive were made.

Follow these steps I found thru google to get windows xp sp3 to recognize your drive:

http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-39282-xp-can-t-recognize-hard-drive-for-os-install

You'll have to use a program to do this but people explain how to do it on that page plus the program is free.

Problem on loadind windows xp on hp pavilion dv2000 laptop

That happens because the BIOS uses a SATA controller that is not included in Windows XP install disk.

Usually you can solve the problem going to BIOS settings and changing SATA/RAID settings.Check your BIOS settings, and disable SATA RAID mode. This is done in different ways depending on the BIOS.

On HP/Compaq computers for example you press F2 on startup to enter BIOS, then disable SATA mode on bios settings.
On other makes the procedure can be slightly different.

Another way to fix the problem, is by creating your own XP setup disk with SATA drivers included, see:
Resolving "Setup did not find any hard disk drives" during Windows .

Your harddrive is probably S-ATA and xp doesnt have a build in driver for it. You need to download a S-ata driver from hps website, I'm not sure if xp can read the driver from anywhere else but a floppy. So i that case your going to need to buy a USB floppy drive.

http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=1420

Theres a tutorial on how to make the floppy.

If the floppy doesnt work, you might need to copy all the xp files into the hard drive and add the Sata driver into the xp installer, that can be hard todo maybe il give you instructions on that later.

Driver problem

you need to follow these instructions:

0. Download the XP Sata driver from the support page and create the driver floppy, attached usb floppy drive to laptop: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=
en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3375953&swItem=ob-51454-1&prod
NameId=3375995&swEnvOID=1093&swLang=8&taskId=135&mode=4&idx=1

1. Power up, hit F10 to enter setup
2. DISABLE SATA native mode
3. Follow the installation instructions in the supplied readme.

If you DO NOT disable native mode for the sata drive, you will end up going around in circles with the XP setup informing you there is no hdd in the laptop, even though you specifically installed sata drivers off the floppy.

Once you get past the "Hit enter to install Windows", you can trash all the partitions on the drive, and recreate one big partition for XP :)

***NOTE*** MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL OF YOUR DRIVERS FOR XP ON A CD AND READY TO INSTALL. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THEM AT THE HP WEBSITE.
