If you can't get into windows normally or into safe mode to try to restore the system back to a date when it worked properly then you'll need to wipe out the hard drive and start the system from scratch.

Sounds like you have to open task manager. probably threw ctrl+del keys together. then once the task manager is open you have the option of typing explorer.exe
once the windows desktop apears go to start then run and type chkdsk c: /R this will recover bad files that are possibly missing from the boot volume. the issue happens when software tries to alter the master boot record where windows load's the operating files off of the main drive root partition. hope this helps you. Good Luck
Initially test the monitor in another pc, if display available use the monitor in Compaq presario sr1610nx. Load to BIOS by restarting and tapping F1, if the display available, the computer is ok. restart and tap F8, if the advanced boot option screen comes up, the software is ok.
Restart the computer and tap F10 and proceed with a destructive recovery to reload the operating system on the computer
what you are describing is the blue screen of death, meaning theres a hardware or software problem, try to boot into safe mode and perform a system restore, if that doesn't work use your XP cd, let it load the drivers and the ask it to fix the existing XP installation, anything that you have saved in my documents should be safe and the problem should be solved. If the blue screen reappears then you have a hardware problem
If U already have 98 on the pc, R U trying to have dual boot, recover, or reload 98 instead of 98ME?
The disk U R using is a recovery disk and U will still need the 98 cd to reload. The disk is for repairing or reloading the 98 system and I would suggest that U learn how to use the command structure first before attempting a system repair.
Please explain what the problem is and what U want the system to do. We R very happy to help U get to where U want to go.
