Water heater with electonic igniter will not work in power outage

Is it possible, safely, to bypass the igniter and have hot water during a power outage? It is a gas water heater and the gas flow is not interrupted, only electricity to the igniter is affected.

What type of heater is this? I need to know the model name and make and then we can go threw the process of how to do it. Most gas heaters do not have power to them and I only know of a few tankless heaters that do.

There are super efficient gas water heaters that do require power to work for two reasons, 1. to ignite the gas, and to exhaust the gas using a power motor/fan exhaust system. very efficient but need power to work. and there is no bypassing.

Ihave all valves open on hot water tank not getting hot water

If it is a Gas water heater, check the pilot and/or the igniter. If it is an electric heater, check to ensure the the power source is available. If power is available, it could be the thermostatic controller or possibly the heater elements are burned out.

I get a c2 11on my rheem ptg2-42pvp remote and intermediate ignition and have done all tech advised steps

1) Before calling service technician, open following links for Rheem tankless troubleshoot resources including Rheem chat, contact, phone, general maintenance manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Rheem-Tankless-water-heater.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Tankless-maintenance.pdf

2) Error codes are start point for troubleshoot.
C2 11 is 'no ignition' and can include air in gas line, bad solenoid valve, loose wires, incorrect polarity on electric outlet, bad grounding, bad igniter, etc.
Multiple error codes can mean PC board failure, so far it appears the board is not the problem.
Next step is testing gas pressure, and testing parts to see where exact problem is located.
Cause can include multiple issues.

3) If technician has already given preliminary help, contact Rheem for name of service technician qualified to test parts, or possible help testing parts yourself. 1-800-432-8373

4) There is no perfect water heater, but non-electronic tank-type are less maintenance, cheaper in long run, easier to fix yourself, and hot water is available in power outage.

Water inside tank-type water heater can remain hot for some time.
That's one advantage of well-insulated tank-type water heaters.

Power outage can be related to failure of gas control.
Unplug stuff when power goes out. And then plug back in after power is restored.
Water heaters with electronics are not protected from surge.
Electronics can blow out during and after power outage. For example nearby lightning strike will cause current to run along household wires. With ordinary power outage, once power is restored, the surge can affect all kinds of electronic circuitry such as timers, water heaters, water softener, treadmill etc.

Sounds like you have intellivent gas control valve:
Open following link to identify gas control, and download typical manual, and download intellivent service manual with troubleshooting, error codes, etc.

Pilot light keeps going out during hot days

Solution is probably better ventilation to gas water heater.
On hot days, heat and lack of ventilation can cause pilot outage.
Hot air causes oxygen molecules to move farther apart, and combustion is no longer supported so pilot goes out.

How can I wire a WH40 timer to a tankless water heater with 2 9kw elements? 240v 75amp 18kw. I do have # 8 AVG wire and 2 double breakers 40amp each. Tank you

You probably could but my question would be "why?" Water heater timers are made to turn power off to waterheaters during the times that we dont need hot water, like in the middle of the night or while you are at work. This keeps the hot water heater from working during those times and wasting energy (gas or electric). Tankless water heaters already have this builtin because they only work when you actuallty turn on the hot water. If the hot water faucet is not turned on, the tankless heater never comes on. It does not use a bit of energy until the hot water is actually turned on. So it will not be using energy during the night or while you are at work. So there really is no reason to do what you are thinking about unless you have another reason that I cant think of. Tankless heaters are great and this is why they save 60% of energy of conventional tank heaters.
