Hi, I need to replace a pc in a shop - it sits in a confined area and the shop does get hot (no a/c). 2 pc's I've built so far have died due to the heat (I think) and the current one is now very temperamental (crashes when devices plugged into USB port, PSU runs very hot etc).
Problem is, space is limited, so a midi tower case is nearly out of the question. Micro ATX ones ideal, but I need to have 2x HD and several fans to cool the beast (not worried too much about noise).
What do people recommend - I need a good case for lots of fans, and as compact as possible (2 x HD, 1 x pci card , 1 x CD are the only additions to the mb etc).
I'm thinking about getting a Casecom 500W ATX power supply - loads of power and hopefully should run cool.

" It would appear that it can be cheap or cool and reliable but not both. "
That's usually the situation. If I was building a brand new mATX system with some considerable office power (instead of thinking along the budget of a Casecom PSU) then the following would be pretty "cool"
= Lian Li PC-V300 # = CoolerMaster iGreen Power 430W (RS-430-ASAA) # = Asus M2NPV-VM sktAM2 mATX GeForce6150 # = AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 35W AM2 # = Thermaltake A2321 Hardcano 14 HDD Cooler #
...plus whatever hard drive, however much DDR2 and whatever CD/DVD drives are necessary.

part of an answer to your question might be- consider very very powerful fans- choose tehm carefully. Maybe Vantec Tornado. get a case with 90 or 92mm and 120mm fan holes. You want a fan with the most CFM possible.
I know it's not common, but you could try removing the side and pointing a huge desk fan at the computer.
I think those AC/DC hot air blowers (often used to cool rooms in the winter) can be set to blow cold air. Consider that isntead of the big desk fan.
Consider air ducts # ., you could stretch it out of teh room, I don't know how long those are. You might not want to put it outside , though maybe if it's pointing down then it won't get rain in it.
Consider a refrigerator style case. there are cases like that , that use refrigerator technology to cool the processor, i'm not sure about how it cools the rest.
You can get HDD coolers, like enclosures for the HDD with a fan in them.
Monitor the temperature e.g. in the BIOS. You should not be in a situation where you're nto sure if the machine is overheating. You should know.
You might want a PSU with holes at the bottom of it where it is over the CPU or HSF. That might help hot air to escape from the case.
Open a window to cool the room down!!
You can always get a case to room temperature, you won't have much luck cooling a case below that. Check the temp in the BIOS so the case is below 40C
If you use a P4, use a northwood not a prescott. It might be easier to cool an AMD Athlon XP 1300+, than a P4.
really consider a blow heater to keep the room cool. Or a window. You won't have any luck if the room is too hot. unless maybe you use the air duct method - which might cool the room too.
MAybe a big case is better do the 2 HDDs aren't too near each other. On the other hand I don't know how that'd effect circulation of air when the side is on the case. I guess you'll need EXTRA powerful fans to make up for the larger size. I like side off and desk fan idea, I think it's worth a try. But monitor temp, it may not work, it's not tried and tested.
