Actually, to put it in sleep mode you hold down the play/pause button for a few seconds. To shut it down, hold down and the back button for a few seconds, and it will totally shut off. To turn back on hit play/pause and it will book back up. The good thing about this is that you can save battery by shutting it down, so you won't have to recharge it if you don't use it for a few days like you would an ipod.
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Send it in to Microsoft and they will be able to fix it for you. Otherwise, I'm sure there are online kits on how to replace the battery (but I fear they can probably get pretty messy just like phone repairs and such). Microsoft should be able to whip a new battery in there quickly.
now what you do is if the zune just has a black screen with a battery symbol and it stays that way forever when on the charger. you, take the zune off the charger and press the play/pause button and if it turns on for a second with the low battery symbol then turns off, your in luck, just hold the play/pause button for 10 - 20 minutes. the zune will have turned on and off alot agitating the battery. once you hold it for 10 - 20 minutes put it on the charger, then presto it works. let charge fully then die completly for every time you use it for a bout a month to let the battery get back into it's normal cycle. ~Dan herzberg~ Thank you*
To restart the Zune device, follow these steps:
1. Set the Hold switch to the unlocked position.
Note To make sure that the Hold switch is in the unlocked position, you may have to move the switch back and forth until the switch is in the correct position.
2. Press and hold the Back button while you press the top of the Zune pad
after much research on this matter in the past few hours. To resolve this situation don't shut the zune down by holding play/pause button it does not shut down properly that way.
Hold down the down & back button down until shuts off....zune recommends as the best way to turn off your zune. Also if you are having problems holding charge, a lot of people replaced the original charge plug and found that it worked again. these cables usually become faulty from previous models and 30gigs. So buy a new cable & shut it down correctly.
Still no worky??? Call zune, within 1 year they will accept it for repairs. They may even send you a new refurbished zune...since they no longer are making the 30 gig...probably for those reasons.
I hope this advice not only helps you but myself. Who wants an expensive paperweight...not I!
