Question about Seagate U6 (ST360020A) 60 GB Hard Drive

Which USB enclosure for Seagate U6 Model ST360020A (60GB)

My old window m/c is dead. I believe the power supply unit failed. I don't need the machine anymore, just want to retrieve some data from the hard drive. Thought about getting a USB enclosure the hard drive, but don't know which one is compatible for my hard drive

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Would suggest a multiple to 1 adapter that would accommodate most if not all types of connection. The price difference would be negligible and since its multiple would work on just about any IDE, SATA, 2.5 or 3.5. A good example is this model.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Connecting old hard drive

Hi Dave,

Thanks for putting your concerns here and I'd pleased to assist any suitable reply.

The drive comes with an USB 3.0 cable which you'll need to connect the USB port situated on the back of your CPU or any corner (either left or right) of your Laptop. You'll need to insert one cable to the power cord as well if there is no internal source of power supply.

At last, if you're struggling while making your hard drive to work, feel free to ask.

Drive isn't giving me the full 60G

Is the drive new/empty? Try formatting the Drive (Careful, this will delete any data on the drive)

Can't start HD, I can hear only biping sound

a biping sound is usually indicative of either a dead drive, or not enough power on the USB bus (for unpowered external drives).
If the drive will take an external power supply, but is not connected to one, try connecting a power supply to it.
If the drive is out of warranty, try removing it from the external enclosure and hook it up internally to the PC. Sometimes the enclosure interface fails. If the drive makes the same noise inside the PC, it's likely dead.

My mac does not recognize my seagate hard drive when plugged in, what shud i do?

Hi, First try plugging it in to another computer. If it works there then the device entry in your Mac istall is damaged and you need to archive and re-install the Mac. If it doesn't work then either the circuitry in the drive enclosure is failing or the drive itself is damaged. First step then is to take it to the shop and have them swap the HDD into a new enclosure and see if it works, if it does, buy the new enclosure and you're done. If it doesn't work then the drive itself is likely failing, respond with your country and city and I will recommend the nearest pro with the right skillset to get your files back. On a final note, if it's new, with no crucial data on it yet. Return it for warranty exchange. Hope this helps FixYa, Chris

Need a power cable

A user on the Seagate forums indicates that his uses a 12V 2A DC power supply. I would suggest, however, that you remove the hard drive from that enclosure and place the drive either inside your PC or inside another enclosure.

If all else fails, contact Seagate: 1-800-SEAGATE

Let me know if this helps!

An external USB drive consists of tow parts:

a hard drive (usually a standard IDE or SATA drive), and

an enclosure

The enclosure is the box containing the drive. It also includes an interface to convert the data from the IDE or SATA interface on the drive to a USB (2) signal. Some enclosures include and internal power supply. The Freeagent has the power supply externally.

Hope that's what you mean.
