Recently the remote control for my Sony STR-DE 197 stereo receiver stopped working. Put brand new batteries in and still no response. I also tried programming two universal remotes and neither of them would work. Makes me wonder if the problem might be in the receiver itself and not the remote. I also followed the instruction manual to "reset" the memory in the receiver and that didn't solve the problem
Could need a new ir sensor or repair solder connections on the display (ir) board. You can check that the remote is putting out a signal by viewing it with a camcorder, turn the camera on look through the viewfinder and point the remote at it push a button. If it is working you will see a flashing light on the remote.

Actually I fixed it. Before giving up all hope I took the batteries out of the remote and put them in the "wrong way". Of course nothing happened, so I put them back in the "right way" and tried it - alas, it worked! No idea how it happened - reversing the batteries must have unclogged some electrical log-jam within the remote.
Hey, look at me that remote is already working
