I just got a 50hdx82 from craigslist, and it needs help. I've posted a short video here of what it looks like, because I'm not even sure I can accurately describe it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mocPfSGvHMw
Basically, the screen seems to shake from left to right so bad that you can't see the picture. When I first turned it on, the menu was affected too (so bad you couldn't read the menu items) but after the tv warmed up, the menu became readable, and the screen is certainly better than it was when it was first turned on (some type of warm-up effect). I did try the touchfocus, and the horizontal lines are clear (and drift downward), where the vertical lines are very squiggly (and drift left).
I appreciate any advice, and if this is a common problem, any pointers to sites that have pictures or directions on how to fix this particular problem (like this one I found while searching for information; it isn't the same problem, but with this much detail I'd definitely try a DIY fix- http://cmpalmer.blogspot.com/2006/11/fixing-my-own-tv-part-ii.html)
Also, I've been reading posts that suggests that part of my symptoms may be the Hyper-board aka DIGI-CONV BOARD. If anyone with experience with these symtoms looks at the posted U-tube video and confirms this, a followup question- if I buy some 16v 10uf surface-mount capacitors, how critical is the sizing? I found a link to one source here:www.mcmelectronics.com but shipping is steep- I'd expect a few lightweight capacitors to come USPS for maybe $3-4 tops. However, I also found items 300290511586 and 290293048335 on ebay, which would be a better deal, but those are 3mmx 5.3mm. I haven't found any cheap shipping 4mm ones yet. Thanks!

One additional question- I have the service bulletin that identifies the capacitors that need replaced; should I still get the full service repair manual? Does it have other useful info in it? Thank you, Keith

It is the Hyper board gone bad. There 11 10uf 16v cap's that go bad. They are very small surface mount type 4mm in size. They are cheap but hard to solder in. There is a guy on ebay who is rebuilding them for $75. Just search this part number: MVPU14 that is the hyper board.

I am sure there is a better person out there to help you but if "they" are blocking you then you may need to contact them, your IP could have been used in some scam, as a very guarded oldie that place looks to be a great playground for hackers and scammers.
It may be worth checking your device for any nasties, also settings may have been changed in it so you are not recognised.
Thats my knowledge limit sorry to say........
All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.
Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out
Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.
This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.
Common Symptoms include....
Screen looks 3D
Colors don't line up
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed or warped.
TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.
SOLUTION
You can get the correct parts, step by step photo instruction guides, and support from www.TvRepairKits.com or click here
Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy
Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.
