Question about Toshiba 50HDX82 50" Rear Projection Television

50hdx82 video shaking

I just got a 50hdx82 from craigslist, and it needs help. I've posted a short video here of what it looks like, because I'm not even sure I can accurately describe it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mocPfSGvHMw

Basically, the screen seems to shake from left to right so bad that you can't see the picture. When I first turned it on, the menu was affected too (so bad you couldn't read the menu items) but after the tv warmed up, the menu became readable, and the screen is certainly better than it was when it was first turned on (some type of warm-up effect). I did try the touchfocus, and the horizontal lines are clear (and drift downward), where the vertical lines are very squiggly (and drift left).

I appreciate any advice, and if this is a common problem, any pointers to sites that have pictures or directions on how to fix this particular problem (like this one I found while searching for information; it isn't the same problem, but with this much detail I'd definitely try a DIY fix- http://cmpalmer.blogspot.com/2006/11/fixing-my-own-tv-part-ii.html)

Thank you very, very much-
Keith

Also, I've been reading posts that suggests that part of my symptoms may be the Hyper-board aka DIGI-CONV BOARD. If anyone with experience with these symtoms looks at the posted U-tube video and confirms this, a followup question- if I buy some 16v 10uf surface-mount capacitors, how critical is the sizing? I found a link to one source here:www.mcmelectronics.com but shipping is steep- I'd expect a few lightweight capacitors to come USPS for maybe $3-4 tops. However, I also found items
    300290511586 and

290293048335 on ebay, which would be a better deal, but those are 3mmx 5.3mm. I haven't found any cheap shipping 4mm ones yet. Thanks!

One additional question- I have the service bulletin that identifies the capacitors that need replaced; should I still get the full service repair manual? Does it have other useful info in it?
    Thank you, Keith

It is the Hyper board gone bad. There 11 10uf 16v cap's that go bad. They are very small surface mount type 4mm in size. They are cheap but hard to solder in. There is a guy on ebay who is rebuilding them for $75. Just search this part number: MVPU14 that is the hyper board.

Toshiba 50HDX82 projection TV has started intermittently going black, still has sound, or looks like a 3D image (minus the glasses to see it right) and last night the power led on the front started...

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

I have a 50hdx82 i want to play my computer which has hdmi vga and dvi on it, what cables do i need to make this work to my computer, what is this tv compatible with.

If your DVI connector on the Toshiba is [DVI-I] and not [DVI-D] then a standard VGA to DVI connector will work. You can then run a DVI cable between your TV and your PC.
Otherwise you can get a new graphics card for your PC that has DVI and video out.
Good luck

Convergence problems on a 50HDX82 tv

You don't need the schematic...JUST LOOK for the STK392-110 or any STK 392 or STK 391 amp on VERY LARGE heatsinks...

They're not Teeny....They're not Weenie...

They're LARGE! Burn your Hand-oh Gigant-oh....

So get your screwdriver out and look for the largest, hottest heatsinks paired together...

Yes, you will be looking for TWO sinks the same size...

Toshiba 50HDX82 Screen Protector

First remove the speaker grill. Then removed the control package via two screws. This should expose the screws that hold the front mask on. You can then slide the mask up and inch or so then pull it forward. Hope this helps.
