Personally, I'd use the VLC Media Player, available for free.

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Cd player does not work,no sound

May be discs is put in wrongly, the VCD.
Car CD put VCD is not sound and reading is normal, because the CD and VCD is a format for encoding, VCD containing video data flow without the corresponding chip can't decode so silent.

The disc/writer dies not open.

Hi! When did this issue begin? You can perform some steps to make sure if the Dvd disk/writer is not working anymore . Try to Shutdown your computer and when you turn it back on Press F2 for Bios option (usually it has a blue screen background) Now check if the DVD drive/writer is detected or while on that option> Try to press on the eject button of the Drive . IF it's ejected it means that it is still working. Now boot on your normal windows and disable or uninstall any burning software that you have installed. Update the driver or firmware by going to sony website and look for the right product description/model and install it . Also update your BIOS then restart your computer then check if the DVD can read any disk like music/video. If it can read something reinstall your Burning software.. Hope this will help you . God Bless

I can watch vcd but not dvd on my notebook.

Hi there.
If the lens was damaged it wouldn't read at all.
Its asking for a decoder, you have to buy these, they are programs like PowerDVD etc.
If you don't want to pay for a decoder then use VLC Player, this will play your DVD's as its universal.

Detects CD but not DVD

Hi Chopadepve,

Please try this method but be more careful during working out on it:

Since your DVD drive reads cd's, but not dvd's It shows that the hardware works fine. Now we need to Edit the Registry to fix this problem.

1) click the start menu
2) click on "run"
3) type "regedit" and click ok
4) go to string key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5) delete "upper filters" and "lower filters" in the right side window.
6) right click my computer in the start menu.
7) click properties
8) go to the hardware tab
9) click device manager
10) expand the dvd/cdrom drives
11) right click the dvd rom and click uninstall
12) Reboot PC

Windows should automatically install a clean ROM drive after the reboot otherwise Open the device manager window and click "scan for hardware changes". DVDs just read fine if you have the correct DVD decoders.

If no luck then might be DVD read head wiped out.

Regards
ELLIN
