Replace drill chuck on 23 year old Craftsman 8" drill press

I am tring to replace the 3/8" drill chuck with a 1/2" chuck on my Crtaftsman 8" drill press model no. 113.213722C. I do not know if it has a morse taper or is threaded on. Can anyone help me with this.

I have tried hitting it gently, then hard. I have tried driving a wedge in and it will not move. I suppose it is possible that it is seized in place from so long not coming apart. I do not know what to try next.

  • sbradshaw640 Feb 09, 2009

I will give that a try, thank you.

I started looking at drill chucks and realized some have retaining screws, when I checked, I had such a screw. I was able to remove the chuck with lite tapping once I had removed the retaining screw. Thank you for your help.

Yes it does have a Morse taper and you can remove it by gently hitting it with a rubber or nylon mallet.

The next thing I would do is get a can of WD40 and spray it on top of the chuck. Let it sit over night. Sometimes a layer of rust forms and ats likt glue. The WD 40 will make its way in there and dissolve the rust.

How do I make the spindle chuck stay in the quill of my model FDM 16 SPC drill press? I have forced it down on a block of wood. It will stay for a while that fall out.

16 speed should have a Morse taper
for the std drill chuck

to fit a different chuck the morse taper needs to be emery sanded
and the replacement chuck should stick
after using the wood block pressure press method

if not you need a new morse taper for that spindle chuck

hint
i had my drill accuracy and off center spin tolerance down to one thou

with stretched old belts I got more speeds than 16
for special jobs
my 16 speed used a morse taper two for the drill chuck

this picture says its a spindle chuck

Two more on the Ram Machinery drill press model no. 0019B. The table is on the opposite side of the base. Would that effect the tables levelness? And where can i pick up a replacement 5/8 chuck?

the table and the head should be over the base ( best balance for the unit )
chucks are available from a tool/ machinery tool shop
what you will need is what taper size it is
tapers are mores tapers and come in sizes 1 through to 5
probably need a no 2 morse taper chuck

Where can i find a 5/8 in. chuck for a Pit Bull CH-16NF Drill press

Take it to a local engineering sales shop. They are all basically the same and fit into the shaft with a morse taper. You just need the correct taper.

Need to know arbor size morse taper

no 1 morse taper is the thin one
no2 is used for most small applications and no 3 is for bigger applications
to get more specific you will have to come back with make ,model and chuck size in use and if there is an adaptor sleeve on the chuck shaft

I need to find a chuck, part #JT3,I think.

sounds like you need a morse 3 taper chuck or you can buy sleeves if its a morse 2 taper anyway not enough information ? is yours a morse taper or is it a screw in chuck? engineering supplies usually stock chucks or machinery shops, as an example try looking at this web site http://www.machines4u.com.au/search/?action=browse_search&industry_id=2&category_id=31 this company is called (machines4u.com.au) they have branches in all states

What size taper is on a delta DP220 drill press so I CAN BUY A 1/2" DRILL CHUCK TO PUT ON IT

If its possible, pop along to a local machine shop and ask nicely if they could help with identifying the Morse Taper, if its a Morse. Go online for what tapers would have been used around that period. Drill chucks are usually 1/2 UNF mount even if its a late metric unit. You would need a Morse to 1/2 UNF or taper to taper if you buy a taper fit chuck.

Is the chuck a know off or threaded chuck. where should i buy a replacement and what should I ask for.

It almost certainly has a #2MT (#2 Morse Taper) drill adapter. Lower the quill and look for a slot on each side of the quill - that's a knockout slot. Insert a steel wedge into the slot and tap the wedge to force the Morse taper apart.

You can buy replacement Morse taper chucks from any number of woodworking or woodturning supply places, or from metalworking supply places, or eBay. You can get them from Grizzly, Packard, Rockler, Enco, Victor, MSC, Grainger... you can buy them through Amazon, you can get them at Sears.

You can buy the assembly as one unit or as two pieces - the chuck and the adapter. If you buy it as two pieces, be sure that the adapter and the chuck have matching tapers - that's usually a Jacobs taper like a #3JT or a #34JT, for example. It's much easier if you buy one matched unit.

You can get keyed chucks, keyless chucks, and automatic chucks with a #2MT shank.

    Drill will not rotate

Did you have to set the chuck into the spindle, or when you got the press, was the chuck already attached to the spindle? With the drill press I got (different brand), I had to set the chuck in the spindle and I put pressure on the chuck to set it in by placing a bit in the chuck and drilling in a piece of wood, which placed pressure on the chuck. If that's not the issue, check to see that the pulleys are turning ( flip the top open). Also check the tension of the pulleys (machine OFF) If there is nothing apparent or obviuosly not working, and if the press is new, yes, I would return it.
