I am tring to replace the 3/8" drill chuck with a 1/2" chuck on my Crtaftsman 8" drill press model no. 113.213722C. I do not know if it has a morse taper or is threaded on. Can anyone help me with this.

I have tried hitting it gently, then hard. I have tried driving a wedge in and it will not move. I suppose it is possible that it is seized in place from so long not coming apart. I do not know what to try next.

  • sbradshaw640 Feb 09, 2009

I will give that a try, thank you.

I started looking at drill chucks and realized some have retaining screws, when I checked, I had such a screw. I was able to remove the chuck with lite tapping once I had removed the retaining screw. Thank you for your help.

Yes it does have a Morse taper and you can remove it by gently hitting it with a rubber or nylon mallet.

The next thing I would do is get a can of WD40 and spray it on top of the chuck. Let it sit over night. Sometimes a layer of rust forms and ats likt glue. The WD 40 will make its way in there and dissolve the rust.

Take it to a local engineering sales shop. They are all basically the same and fit into the shaft with a morse taper. You just need the correct taper.

    Tooth fell out of chuck

I believe you are in line for a different chuck.
I had this happen, and began a 3 year quest for a chuck.
Know that most chucks simply screw on the the shaft that sticks out of the drill.
They are tightly screwed on, but are removable, usually.
I recommend you try tool sales & repair places, and sooner or later, you should find a different chuck.
I does not need to be off a machine like yours, as they are sort of universal.
    God bless your efforts.

    Drill will not rotate

Did you have to set the chuck into the spindle, or when you got the press, was the chuck already attached to the spindle? With the drill press I got (different brand), I had to set the chuck in the spindle and I put pressure on the chuck to set it in by placing a bit in the chuck and drilling in a piece of wood, which placed pressure on the chuck. If that's not the issue, check to see that the pulleys are turning ( flip the top open). Also check the tension of the pulleys (machine OFF) If there is nothing apparent or obviuosly not working, and if the press is new, yes, I would return it.

Would like to replace the 3/4 Chuck on Jet Drill Press

Grizzly sells a nice variety of quality chucks at good prices. Look at the numbers on the chuck you have to determine what to buy. You should remove and re-use the taper from your present chuck. You probably have a Morse #2 taper up into the spindle like the picture shown below. I assume you know 92bb256.jpghow to get that out of the spindle. What is not shown in this picture is the taper that is inserted into the chuck. This is probably a Jacobs taper. To separate that you need to support the chuck in a vise with the long taper pointing down. Put something below it to catch it without damage when it falls out. Open the chuck as far as it will go. Get a bolt (about 3/8) that you can hit with a hammer inside the chuck straight down to knock the taper out of the back of the chuck.

The chuck on my craftsman 8" drill press wobbles. How can I stop it from wobbling?? Can I get a manual for my drill. thanks. billybee3@yahoo.com

There are a couple of different ways that drill chucks are attached on smaller tools. You didn't specify the model, so I can't help much. But here is a link to where you can usually find manuals for Craftsman. If the press is not too old, you will probably be able to find the manual here.

I need a chuck wrench/tool for a duracraft drill press

Are you talking about the chuck key? That's the little wrench with a collar of gear teeth on it.
There are only a few standard sizes plus a couple of odd-balls. Last time I looked, Sears carried a good selection. If you have the old one, take it with you to the store. If you don't have the old one, find a way to measure or approximately measure what you need. Another chuck key that doesn't fit can be a useful reference. If you can find something (maybe a drill bit) that is a close fit into one of the three holes in the chuck, that can be useful too.

Craftsman 10" bench drill press chuck wobbles

If this is a new tool I would take it back and get it replaced. The only other way to eliminate this problem is to determine if it is the spindle or the chuck and replace the defective unit. Warranty works better.

    Remove and replace the chuck

Most drill press chucks are held on with a screw. Open the chuck all the way. Look inside the chuck, there should be a screw in the bottom. Some are left hand threads, some are not. Good Luck
