I have an ACER 4520 laptop with Vista OS. I bought a cooling pad and have updated the display drivers from Acers website. It STILL seems like it's overheating. The area that I can feel the heat buildup is the touchpad and to the left of the touchpad. If I shutdown, wait a few minutes, then restart, I can hear Vista start up and the see/hear the the hardrive is running. I'm guessing I'm to the point of where the only fix is going to be to flash the bios. I have downloaded the latest bios and utitility (Winflash) to install it but it asks to name a file in the second window. Soooooo...what do I name it? Any ideas?!!?!??

- I left something out of my post..sorry about that. After I shut down I can hear Vista start up and see/hear the hardrive running but my monitor stays black. I have to wait until it's completely cooled down before I can get anything to display on the monitor. I have updated all of my driver's from Acer's website. So I assumed that it might be a bios issue?!?!?!?!?!?

- Ok. I downloaded the temperature thermometer. It shows 105 F. That's not as hot as I thought it was. The laptop does feel hot around the area of the touchpad and to the left of that. My main issue is when I restart or close the lid...then go back to log in...I get a black screen. It's like it's not loading the drivers for the monitor. Or when I close the lid it's somehow cutting power to the monitor. The reason I believed it was a heat issue is I literally put the laptop in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes and start it up and it works fine. Any ideas on that?!?!!?!?!?!?!?
The heat you feel on your laptop and your BIOS have nothing to do with each other. The laptop is cooled by the power supply, it has a sensor to start running when it starts getting to hot. The modern CPUs will shut down before they get hot enough to cause any damage. Always make sure your laptop is on a flat, firm surface like a table, the underside of the laptop has a very space to let the hot air out and also along the sides. Here is a website that talks about fixing or changing power supplies, maybe this can help. http://repair4laptop.org/notebook_power_supply.html If you have any questions let me know.
No its a hardware problem, it is getting hot because the power supply fan is not running as it should to keep it cool. You will have to take that one in to get repaired. But don't let them tell you anything else, it is only the power supply so it should not be very expensive, you may even be able to find out on the Internet how to do it yourself if you're comfortable going inside your laptop. Hope this helps. Don't forget to rate this solution.
To keep a laptop from shutting off due to heat related issues, get some canned air and at least weekly, blow the intake fans underneath and the exhaust ports along the sides. Also, an auxiliary fan base under the laptop will help a lot. You can download an HDD Thermometer online for free. It will monitor the temperature of your CPU and you will see when trouble is coming. Mine runs from 25-34 celcius. Once it hits 35, it starts to shut off. I just make sure to blow everything out when it starts to maintain 32 degrees all the time. The canned air is cheap and the fans are about $15 & up.

My wireless connection worked fine up until today...I have reset the switch on the front of my Acer Aspire 5110 and it continues to be ''orange'' rather than ''green'' that would indicate is on and working properly When trying to re-set up a wireless connection, I continue to get an error message telling me that the cable is unplugged? We are on a LAN, using a router, I have a connection just fine on my desktop, which is what I am on.

Compaq laptop: my mouse pointer or arrow is frozen. It happened when I was using email. On the scroll bars of the email, at the end of the message, two transparent boxes appeared, similar to those when setting margins on Word. Have I locked the mouse pointer or is there a fault? The mouse pointer sometimes works when the screen is setting up, but soon freezes. Your solution may need to include how to solve the problem with the keyboard only, because, of course, I can't use the mouse pointer to click. I have tried going to the computer settings and accessing the mouse dialogue box, but have limited use with the arrow keys and the enter key.
