Question about Epson Perfection 3490 PHOTO Flatbed Scanner

Scanner quit Version:0.9 StartHTML:-1 EndHTML:-1 StartFragment:0000000111 EndFragment:0000001393 My scanning quit working very little use. Reinstall driver , software many times without success. Just noticed that as soon as I plug it the right on button comes on always and do not shuts off ever even if you press it to close it.

Is the scanner still under warranty? If so, then see if you can get complementary service for the unit. Otherwise, it might be time to junk it.

Unplug the power cord. Identify the pivot points where the lower handlebars and the footpad link arms connect at each side of the machine. Use a screwdriver to remove the inside and outside elbow covers at each connection. This will expose the pivots.

Put a box wrench on the lock nut at the inside of one pivot and loosen the bolt with an Allen wrench. Remove the bolt and check the assembly for nylon spacers or a bearing. If no spacer is found, proceed to the next step. Replace the nylon spacers, reassemble the connection and reattach the elbow covers. Repeat this at the opposite side of the machine.

Have an assistant hold a deep socket against the inside face of the pivot hub. Make sure the socket is large enough to allow the bearing to pop out. Insert the point of a flat screwdriver into the outside of the hub until it contacts the bearing. Tap the handle of the screwdriver with a hammer to remove the bearing. Repeat this to remove the bearing on the opposite side.

ERR1 indicates a speed issue. In this case, the motor speed as reported from the optic sensor differs

from the speed setting.

Analysis: Optic sensor signal issue -- Either the optic sensor signal is not right, or it is read incorrectly, or

the signal is not reaching the display.

clean the speed sensor, test for open or faulty. tight the connector very well. RUN the software calibration for easy troubleshooting and fix it.

The Steps for Newer Style Console Calibration

  1. Locate the calibration area on the rear or underside of the console (a hole, near the console's center, that goes through to the electronics board. (This hole should not have a screw in it.)

  2. Insert a pencil (eraser end), into the hole and feel around for the cal button (will click when pressed).

  3. Press the button 2 times (with the pencil eraser). The first click should show CL11 in the console, the second click should show CL21.

  4. If the process was done correctly, and CL21 appears in the console, you are in "calibration mode." The next few steps consists of pressing buttons on the console and observing settings. This will not require any other tools.

  5. Press ENTER. CL22 should display in the TIME window and (??) in the SPEED window.

  6. Press ENTER. CL23 should display in the TIME window and (??) in the SPEED window.

  7. Press ENTER. CL24 should display in the TIME window and (??) in the SPEED window.

  8. Press ENTER. CL25 should display in the TIME window and (??) in the SPEED window.

  9. Press ENTER. CL26 should display in the TIME window. You should then see the letter "E."

  10. Press ENTER. You should see "SS" or "55" in the console.

  11. Push the STOP/START button. For safety, at this point, you should step off, or be off, the treadmill.

  12. Push the ENTER button. The walking belt should start to move, accelerate to maximum speed, then stop on its own.

  13. When the belt stops, the incline should self test by raising to its highest incline position, then lowering back down to its lowest position.

  14. Once the incline test is complete, push the POWER button 2 times. The unit should shut off and the console should go completely blank. If this happens, the treadmill is done calibrating and is ready for use.

  15. If the letter "F" appears in the SPEED or INCLINE window when the power button is pressed 2 times, the treadmill is indicating a failure somewhere either in the SPEED or INCLINE (depending on the window the "F" appeared in). Troubleshooting the failure would be the next step.

1. The batteries may need replacement. Somedigital cameras continue to function when their battery power is low, but produce grainy photos with incorrect coloration. Make sure you aren't using Ni-Cd rechargeable batteries, which are generally not recommended for cameras.
2. For the best picture quality, make sure the camera is set to its highest resolution. This may have been adjusted by accident. The process for doing this varies greatly among different digital cameras. Keep in mind that fewer photos will fit in the camera's memory and it will probably take longer to transfer them to the computer, at a higher resolution.
3. Digital
photography tends to be more prone to blurring (caused by slight movement of the camera while the photo is taken) than 35mm film, especially with very small or lightweight digital cameras. To remedy this, try using a tripod and/or the camera's timer, if it has one. Adjust the camera's shutter speed if possible.
4. If colors are too pale, using an image editing/viewing program (such as PictureWorks MediaCenter) to increase the Saturation level may be helpful. If the camera has produced colors which are entirely wrong (everything is in shades of black and purple, for example), you can turn the saturation all the way down so that it becomes a black & white photo.
5. The lens may need cleaning. Make sure you use a cleaning material which will not scratch the lens. If possible, refer to its manual for specific cleaning instructions

Be aware that the resistance is often the part that requires repair. Resistance is managed magnetically, so often if the machine is working, but the resistance isn't setting correctly or at all, check the bolts that secure the magnets. If they are loose, the resistance will slip. If the bolts are fine, check the magnets themselves by using a refrigerator magnet and see if it is attracted or repelled by the your fridgeicon1.png magnet. If not, the magnets have de-magnetized and need to be replaced.Test with the magnet from a refrigerator, If the magnet attract and repulse, is o.k If not replace the magnet.

A friend of mine sold me it for a good price. I run Leopard in a Powerbook G4 15” 1.2 ghz 2 Gigas ram. I installed the Nikon scan 4 and when I open it the scanner report an error: The Scanner has reported a hardware error... every time that I run the program this message appears. I thought that this was because I hadn’t got the film holders. When the film holders arrive from USA the same problem appears : The Scanner has reported a hardware error... Them I tried Silverfast Software. In this case the scanner report another error: there are not film holder ( or something like that). I uninstalled Nikon Software with the same utility to install it. Reinstall the Software and the same ****** problem. When I switch on the scanner a loud noise came from inside, after this the blinking light stopped and nothing happen ( no calibration, no light inside, nothing). Just one thing. The Scanner has reported a hardware error...
I checked on internet and the solution of switch it of and on doesn’t work. CALL TO THE NIKON SERVICE that’s was my only solution.
Of course I didn’t . The price of the scanner was 300 Pounds.
SO I OPENED IT.
I REMOVED THE SCREWS FROM THE BACKSIDE AND FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE SCANNER. I TOOK THE METALLIC CASE OF: PICTURE 1. After a while looking everything without touch I’m start to check for the connection cables one by one, WHEN DISCOVER THAT ONE CABLE PLUG THAT GOES FROM THE SCANNER TO THE FIREWARE BOARD WAS DESCONECTED…. PICTURE 2 Maybe on the shipping this plug looses his place. SO I SWITCH ON THE SCANNER AND THE PROBLEM DOESN’T APPEAR. Now the problem was that the film holder wasn’t recognising from the scanner. So I followed the steps that most frequently indicate on the web:

1-Close the scan program –
2-Turn off and unplug the scanner
3-Plug the LS9000 back in and turn it on
4-Reopen the scan program

The scanner worked. When I switch on the scanner take a minute or so to calibrate and determinate the film holder. Them I open the Nikon Scan 4 and every looked nice. I could scan my first negative ALELUYAAAAA. So I close everything without the screws so I put the scanner vertical to put back the metal case ones I finished I turned on the scanner and the Nikon program. For my surprise the same ******* error I couldn’t believe it.

I opened it again and I found the cause of the problem . BECAUSE THE SCANNER WAS ON VERTICAL BEFORE, THE METALLIC GUIDE THAT CONNECT WITH THE SERVO WAS MOVED (Move the scanner from one place to another may cause this issue) So with my finger I putted it in the same place. THE SCANNER WORK’S.
After this the only problem was a big loud gnashing and grinding noise that I sorted with CELOTAPE BETWEEN THE TWO PIECES THAT WAS SEPARATED BEFORE.
