LG WM2016CW won't drain

We've had this machine about 18 months and have never had a problemwith it before. A coupld days ago it stopped draining and we get error OE which the documentations says means drain error. After reading some of the other entries on the site I doublechecked and it it definately "OE" vice "DE", and the laminated chart says Drain Error. So we cleaned teh filter and squirted water into the little hole in the back of the filter housing and removed a lot of gunk. We poured water into the holes just behind the door and got out more gunk, and then we disconnected the drain hose and blew into the outlet (not a pretty site) and got even more gunk out. Water we drain out the little tube near the filter runds clear now, and the filter is completely clean. But we continue to get the same error and the water will not drain. Suggestions??

The impeller may have come off the pump motor shaft. Generally, you will notice a louder sound when the pump runs if this happened.
Unplug the machine. Remove the filter recess by removing the one screw inside and using a putty knife at the left and / or right edge and popping it out. Pull the machine out about 18 inches and tip it back, resting it against the wall. Remove two more screws behind where the recess was holding the pump housing on. Reach under the machine and remove pump. There is a tab to depress under the pump housing to release it from the base. The pump motor is held onto the housing by three screws. Remove them and inspect the impeller to see if it has come off the shaft. If it has, pushing it back on will not solve the problem, as it will come off again. Install new pump motor and reassemble. Clean washer tub with the longest, hottest cycle and three Ah-fresh tablets, Whirlaway hot tub cleaner, Smellywasher cleaner (smellywashercleaner.com) or Tide washer cleaner. Repeat. From now on, use only 1 tablespoon of HE laundry detergent per load (1/2 T if 2X concentrate) and only 1 teaspoon of fabric softener per load if you use it. (these machines use very little water, and thus require reduced amounts of additives to work properly)

I followed these instructions and aure enough the impeller was off the shaft. With the front filter bezel off and the machine tipped back I was able to see everything. Two more screws under the bezel and depressing the tab to release the pump and filter housing from the plastic bottom of the machine you can them remove the pump from the filter housing. three screws to seperate the pump from the housing and that's it. Don't think it matters on wire orientation as the motor is 115v ac.
    Thanks MNTECH

This does really works! There was a stuck dime in the pump so the propeller can't move. Just be careful around the metal housing which can be sharp. Thanks again!

Open the little door in the bottom left hand corner, unscrew the black cap and drain the water out. Mine had alsorts in this pipe, money hair clips you name it. After unblocking this pipe the washer began to drain and spin as it did before.... happy days... :D

Make sure you reach right in and check that nothing is blocking the impeller itself. Reach into the little hole on the left inside the tube.

Thanks for the great write up / advice MNTECH. My WM2016CW was making a horrible mechanical grinding sound when it was trying to drain water from the washing cylinder. After reading your post I decided to attempt the repair by myself and I found a hair pin in the pump impeller. After inspecting the assembly I removed the pin and reassemble the pump and it is working like a champ.

My advice to any WM2016CW owners is if your machine is not draining properly and your trouble shooting has narrowed it down to a broken or clogged pump the repair or replacement is a snap and it will save you a bit of money. Once again thanks MNTECH.

I found that same hair pin by reaching into the drain hole after the filter was removed. On the left hand side is a small hole that the offending pin was sticking out of. I pulled it out and everything worked perfectly. Check this hole before taking the pump apart.

We had the same issue, HooliganJ and I passed your tip on to my hubby. He found a quarter in there and it is now fixed! Whew! We were upset because our 3 year warranty had just expired 2 weeks ago.

I had the same error, BUT I found a quicker fix. (unplug the machine first) After I cleaned the filter, I took my shop vac (wet dry vac)and used the blower end on the filter hole. I turned it on and the washer filled with stuff. GET READY as soon as you turn it off the water and debris will come flooding out. So after that happened I vacuumed the tub ALL AROUND EVERY hole. Vacuumed the filter hole again and then put the machine on tub clean. The error code OE is gone and it is working perfectly!!!

Hi if you remove the pump again get a plug and wires example from a table lamp and attach 2 wires to the pump dont worry about polarity it will run both ways plug into the wall see if the pump runs out of the machine ( does this model have 2 pumps one could be the recirculation pump)

Washing machine will not drain water

Here are some basic troubleshooting steps you can follow to help you determine why your washing machine won't drain:

1. Check the drain hose in the back of the machine and make sure it isn't kinked or flattened.

2. If it spins but won't drain, there could be a piece of fabric stuck between the inner and outer tub, or even the drain hose or pump itself. The farther into the machinery a clog goes, the trickier it can be to remove. It could also be a faulty timer.

3. Are clothes soaked at the end of the wash, even though it appears to go through the spin and drain cycles? Worn or loose belts could be the culprit.

4. When the spin cycle starts, do you hear a humming noise? It could be a faulty or jammed impeller pump.

For more suggestions on troubleshooting and fixing this issue, check out Washing machine not draining. I hope this helps!

Our WM2016CW machine's drain hose has a wire mesh filter on the end of it. The drain hose then is attached to a drain pipe which used to be connected to an old sink (no longer there). Is this mesh

This is not needed, It has been put in place maybe because of a tendency to get blockages in your drains? These machines break up the particles a lot to assist in removing them and resulting in less pump blockages so what used to collect in older machines pumps now goes down the drain.

My washer won,t drain how hard is it to replace the pump on a lg wm2016cw

Open the little door in the bottom left hand corner, unscrew the black cap and drain the water out.
If this doesn't fix the problem, you may need a new Drain pump. Install new drain pump and reassemble.
