My Acer Aspire One PC Notebook speakers stopped working

Hotkeys
The computer employs hotkeys or key combinations to access most of the
computer's controls like screen brightness, volume output and the BIOS utility.
To activate hotkeys, press and hold the <Fn> key before pressing the other key
in the hotkey combination.

<Fn> + <F8> Speaker toggle Turns the speakers on and off.

<Fn> + < > Volume up Increases the sound volume
(only for certain models).

<Fn> + < > Volume down Decreases the sound volume
(only for certain models).

Hp notebook volume control is fluctuating randomly

Had / have the same problem in my dv5t - the culprit was the volume hotkeys on the case (right below the screen). As it turns out it's very prone to static electricity and tends to change the volume level up and down randomly.

In my case - simply swiping the whole hotkey area with a finger helped.

This is only a temporary fix and will pop up every once in a while.
There is no permanent way to resolve this (apart from uninstalling the hotkeys)

These instructions are for Windows XP:

  • The Magnify button and the Fn keys will not function properly before the operating system has finished starting.
  • The setting may not be saved if the ESC key is used to close the Fn display. Press the ENTER key or allow the Fn display to close automatically to save the setting.
  1. Click the Start button, then click Run .
  2. In the Run window, next to Open , type MSCONFIG .
  3. Press the ENTER key.
  4. In the System Configuration Utility window, click the Startup tab.
  5. On the Startup tab, under Startup Item , ensure that there is a check in the HKserv checkbox. NOTE: If HKserv is missing, reinstall the HotKey Utility application and the Sony Utilities Library.
  6. Click the OK button.
  7. In the System Configuration box, click the restart button.

None of the solutions in the forums work, at least they didn't work for me. I finally got the solution from Lenovo support. You need the hotkey driver from their website. Download it here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-38953

Follow the instructions on the above site to run hotkey\setup.exe and reboot, and you will have your on-screen displays back!
