First unplug your printer...

Lift your printer top, like you are going to change your ink cartridges.

Unplug your scanner & control panel by disconnecting the 3 ribbon cables

Then, you will need a screwdriver (philips head). remove the screws (about 4) from the inside housing cover.

After you have this cover off...

You should be able to see the sides of the cartridge. Take your encoder strip (gently) and thread it through the back of the cartriidges. Note: There are small slits on the side where you can thread.

If the encoder strip has come completely off (there should be tension if it is connected), you will have to located the right and left "pins" to attach it back to. I have a lexmark x-2500 so, mine are on the metal frame. The right end (arrow up) attaches to a metal strip which points straight towards you (a part of the metal frame) with a small notch at the right end and on the left end there's a type of "punchout" pin which is a part of the metal frame. I had to slightly bend the right end pin to the right, just enough to create some tension & keep the encoder strip from popping back off. The left end pin should already be bent out to the left.

Hopefully, this helps someone

I had the same problem with me encoder strip popping off. THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!! I tried tech support from Lexmark and they just told me that it was a malfunction and fixing it would cost me more than a new printer. Then, they tried to get me to buy a new printer from them... UGG!!! U were SUCH a help!!! Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Cannot find the way to put the encoder strip in the slots at the back of the cartridge carriers. model is lexmark X6170

like many others who have Lexmark X6170 I had a problem when the page was partially printed, and the LCD screen on the printer would give me the hardware error 502. as i learned from this forum, but as well from the lexmark site the problem was with the encoder strip which runs on the back of the cartridge carriers (it's a grayish transparent strip running from left to right, attached with the small hooks on eather side; there is a good picture of it on this site). The solution for it, as many had said, was to to pull down and forward the encoder strip so it could fit into the slot on the back of the cartridge carriers. The maddening part is that you don't know where the slot is, how it looks like, and after 1 hour of futile attempts and feeling VERY stupid, I remembered that i have a small dentist's mirror (you know the one he uses to see your tooth from the difficult angle, anyway don't ask), I alligned it and found that the slot is exactly in the middle of the cartidge carriers (remember there are 2 cartridges), just under blue and black thingiies which look like a small batteries and are placed almost on the top of the carrier. Now the interesting thing with the slot is that you could see that you are suposed to put the strip in it from bellow, but in my case, and I don't know if that's same elsewhere, there was a thin plastic part obstructing the acces from bellow. Now there were some interesting questions; first how to put it back; and secondly how the hell did it fal out of there. The only possilble solution, from my point of view was to de-attach the strip from its hooks (left one is easy and well visible, the right one is a bit tricky, it's kind of wire which you have to pull slightly towards you), and then pull it throught he slot. Now I have to tell to every one that was a bit of work, mainly because I don't have fingers of the five year old, but after some time i managed to do it (it's also important you have a good light, to see what you're doing). After acertaining it was through (that mirror again), i re-attached the strip first left than right. I dont know if cleaning the metal rod helps i did it anyway, the strip was clean anyway after being in my hands for so many hours. Put the printer on, no error 502 on the screen, performed the hardware test, and printed several pages afterwards. Knock on wood it works all right now.

Hardware error 0502

The encoder strip may have gone out of range of the sensor, or it might be dirty.
  1. Switch off the printer using the power button.
  2. Disconnect the power cable from the back of the Lexmark X5100/X6100 Series.
  3. Leave the power cable disconnected for 30 seconds.
  4. Slide the cartridge carrier to the middle of the printer by taking the top part of the belt and moving it gently to the right.
  5. Take out both cartridges.
  6. Place an index finger on the encoder strip on either side of the cartridge carrier.
  7. On the back of the cartridge carrier, there is a small slot that the encoder strip fits into. Slightly push the encoder strip down and then back up to get it into the slot.
  8. Lightly press the strip first to the rear and then forward, if necessary.
  9. Clean the encoder strip with a dry tissue. Also clean the contacts of the printer.
  10. Reconnect the power cable and switch the printer on again.
  11. Try to print....
Good luck...

LEXMARK X6170 HARDWARE ERROR 0502

The problem is you can't see the slot, as it's in back of the carrier. I took a dental mirror that has a built-in light on it and found the slot. Without that it's impossible to see, and you'll just have to follow the directions by feel.

Lexmark 6170 encoder strip reattach help needed

There is a spot where the strip goes through and it MUST be in this slot. It might be just a slot or it could be a hole it goes through. On all inkjets the strip will ALWAYS be straight and not pushed either frontward or backward, if it is, its not where is should be.
