Question about HP Pavilion dv9000z Notebook

Vista not recognizing USB drive

I have an HP laptop with Vista Home Premium SP1 and it is not recognizing USB drives, reporting that the driver is missing. The USB port is okay and the drive name is visible, but that's all I can see.

Scouring the Microsoft support site I thought I had tracked the problem to a missing infcache.1, which is apparently fixed by the update for KB940199 which I downloaded (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=51f0ef25-280b-4613-a600-c61224bacd1c&displaylang=en&Hash=7QV3sloPZkAgkkTlVGObc4%2fNQVVTMgi%2bVwHJ%2fjEQ4HB4mk%2b7R2fOmOvWswalOLUPL5wl5rwknAAxwTM1mFOD4g%3d%3d).

However, when I run the update the Windows Update Standalone Installer fails with the message "The update does not apply to your system".

I'm now baffled and stuck. Any advice appreciated as I don't fancy paying through the nose for Microsoft support to tell me something obvious.

Thanks but unfortunately the warranty expired 6 months ago. But it has been back to HP since then for a motherboard replacement after a meltdown due to overheating. I'm not sure if the driver problem happened before then.

I need to reinstall Vista Home Premium SP1 64 bit on a HP laptop. I have a disk for Vista but it is from Dell. Can I use that disk to reinstall?

This should not pose a conflict. I have done it a few times, you just have to use the License key found on the bottom of the HP laptop. It will also install some dell drivers but that shouldnt affect it too much. You can get the rest of the needed drivers from HPs website.

Tip

Which Windows Vista Edition are you?

If you are upgrading XP to Vista, make sure you backup and have the program "Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor"

Download Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=42B5AC83-C24F-4863-A389-3FFC194924F8&displaylang=en

Be Sure to Backup with a removable media such as CD's, Floppy Disks or USB Flash Drives, External Hard Drivers.

Windows Vista Editions:

Windows Vista Home Basic
Windows Vista Home Premium
Windows Vista Business
Windows Vista Ultimate
Windows Vista Starter
Windows Vista Enterprise

These also include 64-bit.

Lastly, if you have XP and if it's Vista Capable, you don't need to use the upgrade advisor, you are allowed to use any, but you must download the drivers after upgrade.

Is there any reason as to why you do not want to replace the eternal DVD ROM drive? This would solve your issue all you do is load the recovery disks and finish the job. They are not that expensive and really easy to replace them. Just a thought? John

Dell Media Direct Cannot access hard drive due to bitlocker encry

Sounds like the hard drive was encrypted prior to the upgrade to SP2.

If that's the case, you may have created a password during the encryption process. See this reference to recall the steps for encrypting a hard drive with Bitlocker.

Follow the steps for unlocking your hard drive and you should be ok.

If for some reason, you never encrypted the hard drive and do not have a password, then the encryption may have been caused by some bug in the upgrade and you should contact Microsoft to resolve.

Installing a new hard drive in an HP Pavilion dv2000.

On Seagate's website, they should have a drive transfer software to transfer everything over to a new drive. There are commercial drive clone applications too, like Paragon Drive Copy which you can find with Google.
