Question about Dell Dimension 4700C PC Desktop

My Dell 4700c locks up for no reason at all, start-up issues

- usually, at random my 4700c will lock up on me. it only seems to happen when I am burning a cd or syncing my ipod. but it has happened when all I was doing was surfing the interweb. it has no rhyme or reason, and could lock up on the first track I sync, or mid way into a 400 track sync.
- since this has happened, almost every time I start my computer Windows will not start and I need to keep shutting it off until it will start. occasionally I get a horrible noise/lock up issue on the first windows screen, but if I hit F2, I can get Windows to start after I exit the configurations window.
I have an external hd and nothing but programs on C: am I screwed or what?

I was having this problem a month ago, and a friend told me to buy an external so he could transfer all of my items to it and reformat my C: drive. he did so, and upgraded me to Windows XP professional too.

not a week later it was locking up on me again, just less frequently.

I have a feeling your hard drive is going bad if your hearing a clanking sound sometimes. Best way to know is to try to save your important stuff onto your external hard drive if you can and then format your C: drive using a windows 98 boot disk. If it can't go thru the format then you know for sure the drive is bad or if your hearing clanking sounds from the drive while your trying to do any of these steps then the drive is still bad.

Randomly locking doors and sometimes continuous clicking leading to battery drainage.

If the locking seems continuous and almost glitchy I would buy new locks for both front doors. If it seems to be one timing lock and not acting glitchy then it most likely is a interference with a security alarm at that point I would disconnect the fuse for pwr locks as a quick fix.

Dell 4700C randomly goes into "sleep mode" and doesn't wake up.

Honestly, my first suggestion would have been to upgrade your memory. If you go into control panel and check your power settings (I'm assuming you're on windows XP) Do you have all of you options set to "Never"? You may also want to check your BIOS settings to see how your sleep/hibernate is set up. Aside from that, you'd have to run some hardware diagnostics to give a better idea of what to look for. Hope this helps!
