Question about NetGear DG834 Router

Can only connect 1 computer to 'net on router

I have a desktop with a wireless connection to a netgear dg834. I can't get my laptop to connect to the internet, it will recognise the network and connect to it but it won't let me connect to the 'net. I can access the router off the laptop over ethernet but cant connect to the net no matter what I do. The desktop is running Vista and the laptop is an old one using Windows 2000.

thanks for getting back so quickly.

I've upgraded to xp and still have no luck connecting to the 'net.

I get an ip address returned from ipconfig, it's different to the one given to me by my isp. my desktop has the ip address given by my isp, the one for the laptop that i'm trying to connect is similar to the address of the router.

Thanks, my account doesn't require a username or password. I seem to have to enter all the settings on my desktop as well as the router, if I just put the settings on the router and set the desktop to automatically detect settings it stays aquiring ip address forever. think I'm just going to reset everything and start again, maybe use a large hammer too while I'm at it!!!!

got everything sorted, turned out i was using the wrong type of router. had an adsl one instead of a network one.

thanks again for all your help.

Is desktop connected to router by wire or wirelessly??

I think what is happening is that your router works in Bridged mode. Did you enter your username and password provided by ISP into router or desktop machine?. If latter is the case, then you only getting internet on desktop machine and your router cannot share it.

what you need to do is enter your DSL settings in the router. I found link to the manual on how to do it:http://documentation.netgear.com/dg834pn... If you are not sure just call your provider. Most of them don't mind helping, it will probably take some time, but you'll get someone to walk you through the steps.

Rourke, you shouldn't be entering the same settings on both router and desktop. I should only be on the router. It seems like something with DHCP is misconfigured on your router. Make sure it (DHCP) is enabled.

How do I connect to my wireless laptop

What is the Operating system on the laptop ?
If it is XP then in the bottom right hand corner you will find Wireless network connection ( looks like 1 computer monitor). Use that icon to connect to the wireless network.
If it is windows Vista, then in the bottom right hand corner you will find 2 computer monitor icon. Use that icon to connect to the wireless network.
If it is Windows 98/ME/2000 then use the adapter utility to connect to the wireless network.
For MAC you will see the AIRPORT icon at the top.

Check the wireless settings of the router first . Make sure that yopu have all the wireless settings of the router. If you are not sure about the settings, then open the router set up and check the settings.

Cant get online with ps3 since ive purchased a new NETGEAR dg834

Hi, please perform the steps below to configure settings on the router:

Please follow the steps on a computer connected to the router so as to check the network key:
    1. Open the browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Safari).
    2. Access the router usually by typing 'http://192.168.1.1' or 'http://www.routerlogin.com' in the address bar.
    3. Login to the router with the Username as "admin" and Password as "password" (please note that Username and Password are case sensitive).
    4. Click on Wireless Settings (under Setup) from the left menu.
    5. Check if WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) or WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) is selected under 'Security Options'.
    6. If WPA-PSK is selected, copy the code entered in the passphrase.
    7. If WEP is selected, copy the code entered in the key that has been checked.
This is the code required for connecting the wireless computer to the router's wireless network.

In some cases, for security reasons the passphrase might show as asterisks. In this case type a new Password and click apply. You will then have to use the same Password for all the wireless devices connecting to the network.
Please scan for the wireless network on the PS3 and connect to the wireless network.

    Connection with netgear to laptop

Helen, you should be able to connect from your laptop to your router wirelessly. From what I understood your router is hooked up to your PC directly. If that's the case from your PC connect to your router and enable wireless. Go to Netgear support web page to find out how to do it. Once enabled, you should see your router's name in the list of available wireless networks on your laptop

Can only connect 1 computer to router

You might need to check if your laptop is able to get a valid IP address when connected wirelessly to the router. You can go to the Control Panel then click on network connections and look for wireless network connection. Right click the wireless network connection then click properties. Click the support tab and there you will see the IP address. You should not be getting 169.254.x.x. Where X represents numbers.

An IP address is very important. Make sure you're getting a correct IP address and it should be the IP address provided by your router. Without a valid IP address, you won't be able to get onlinwe. Your wireless connection can tell you that its connected eventhough its not getting a valid IP address.

No connectivity to 2nd desktop or laptop - although worked before

Hello....sudden loss of wireless on two computers, in the same home, may indicate that a powerful source of wireless interference has just arrived (since your wireless router light is still on).

    1) Does the signal improve if you move the router, or move the laptop closer to the router?
    2) Have you had any success with changing the channel on your router? (Login to router > select Wireless Settings > Channel)

If you have not moved furniture yourself, or installed a device which could interfere with the signal (eg a DECT phone), it's possible a neighbour's new router may be the culprit.

Please come back to Fixya if this does not help.

Netgear wireless router DG834PN wireless access local only I can get internet on my desktop which is connected to the router via ethernet but I can connect to the router wirelessly on my laptop but only...

With Vista on the Laptop it should be just a matter of double clicking the router in the network settings, vista should automatically configure the connection.
This has happened to me before and this is what I did just to see if it worked, and it did flawlessly.

I experienced a similar problem with a Vista laptop a few weeks ago. There were no apparent problems, so I uninstalled the wireless network adapter from the Windows "device manager" and then let it automatically reinstall the wireless adapter when it rebooted. The local wireless network appeared about 5 minutes after the reboot and has been working ever since. Hope this idea helps!
