Question about Printers & Copiers

16 Answers

When trying to print any document using Lexmark X4580, I'm unable to print due to this message - 'Unsupported Cartridge', indicating that the installed cartridges are incompatible with the printer? I'm confused - the cartridges installed are BOTH Lexmark, that is 2 colour and 3 black. Any suggestion as to the problem?

Hi there,

when you get "unsupported cartridge" and you are using original cartridges, or cartridges you know they are good, that means that the problem is a dirty contact inside the ink carriage.

Clean the metal plate contacts inside the ink carriage with cotton and isopropyl alcohol, that usually fix the problem.

Hi there
Remove power from the printer, remove the cartridges, and clean the contacts on the cartridge rack with cotton wool or a cue-tip, make sure all the ink residue is cleared before putting the cartridges back in, if you have to reinstall the printers software and see if you can print a test page.
If this does not work the printer has malfunctioned.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

Even though the cartridge says that it is from Lexmark, it still has different models that it could be for a whole bunch of different Lexmark models. Check to make sure the model numbers match. It should tell you which models the cartridge fits on the side of the cartridge box.

Was the printer purchased @ Circuit City?

If so, they have proprietary rights to the cartridges and must be replaced with THEIR items.

Hurry to the closest store near you and stock up!! As they are filing for bankruptcy. You can get them for 30-40% off right now!!

You NEED the number 2 and 3 cartridge.

See THIS LINK for proof.

Thank you for using FixYa - a FixYa rating is appreciated.

Circuit City in US and Dixon Store Group in Europe.

    Direct from LexMark website -

    What you will see

When a cartridge is inserted, an Unsupported Cartridge error message is displayed on the printer operator panel.

    Affected printers

This issue affects printers sold exclusively in the Dixon Store Group (DSG) in Europe and in Circuit City in the U.S. NOTE: The cartridges for these printers are sold exclusively in these stores or on their websites.

    Explanation

The printers listed in the table below are compatible with a #2 cartridge (in single cartridge printers) or a combination of #2 and #3 cartridges (in two-cartridge printers). They do not support the standard color 28A 35, and Mono 29A 34 ink cartridges. If the standard color 28A 35 or Mono 29A 34 ink cartridges are used in these printers, they will fail to print and the printer will post an Unsupported Cartridge error message.

    Solution

Lexmark recommends using either a #2 cartridge for single-cartridge printers or a combination of #2 and #3 cartridges in two-cartridge printers.

    Exclusivity is your problem!!

I would suggest replacing the printer - as CC is now going out of business... and replacements will be hard to come by.

There is no workable fix to your priter besides using the #2 and #3 as I described above.

Thanks for using FixYa - a FixYa rating is appreciated!!

    Your initial question -

When trying to print any document using Lexmark X4580, I'm unable to print due to this message - 'Unsupported Cartridge', indicating that the installed cartridges are incompatible with the printer? I'm confused - the cartridges installed are BOTH Lexmark, that is 2 colour and 3 black. Any suggestion as to the problem?

So the obvious question then remains.... have you tried the Lexmark Cartridge #28 and #29??

If you are replacing the cartridge with an exact replacement of what was in the printer, Im afraid the printer's circutry has failed.

The end result is still the same - there is no end-user fix that can be done. It must be taken in for servicing.

Try you previous cartridges again and see if the same message appears.

Unfortunately FiXya removes all "comments" from your post when we choose the "reply" button. So if some comments I have made are already suggested, it is because I cannot see them until I submit this suggestion.

I can see from the above posts that you have tried all possible solutions available. But it seems nothing worked. So I believe you may need to get a technician have a look at the printer. Without having a look at the system and checking various options, I dont think it will be possible for us to identify the problems.

One cartridge or cartridge/printer chip might be defective it is common
Do you have any old ones left. If yes try to put them one by one, first replace black and try to print, if no error black cartridge defective and so on. It might also happened if you use non-lexmark cartrides in this case you will need to push reset button to clear the message on the screen
Recommmended cartriges are here

AS A VERY LAST SOLUTION YOU CAN PUT TAPE OVER PRINTER SENSOR BUT IF FOR SURE VOID THE WARRANTY AND NOT RECOMMENDED

Good Luck

Also, try cleaning the contacts ( shiny copper on the toner.

Could be a p[roblem with the installed drivers for the printer

Go into printers and faxes and
try downloading and installing the latest drivers from here
http://www.siliconguide.com/drivers/device/193/

Also a good idea to make sure all windows updates have been downloaded and installed

Open Internet Explorer --> Tools Windows updates

If you cannot see tools tap the <ALT> key on the keyboard

If you are sure you got the right cartridges please remove them and make sure the tape is not on the electrical contacts. Once done reinsert them and make sure they are in place correctly. if this does not solve the problem unplug all the connections to the printer and then wait 60 seconds and plug it back in and see if the problem is still there. Please post the results once you have done these steps.

The cartridge usually has a chip attached to it - which the printer reads to see if the cartridge is genuine or not. The chip contains information such as the number of pages printed, the serial number and how much ink is remaining.
If the printer detects in incorrect chip or that the chip is not present then you will get the "Unsupported Cartridge" message.

There are ways of getting around this problem but they usually involve modifying the printer is some way. Sometimes its as simple as putting tape over the sensor and other times more drastic measures are required. It will depend upon what printer model you are using. Any modifications you make will likely invalidate any warranty you may have.

The other point to make about refills is that they are cheap because they are made of cheap materials. You will probably reduce the lifetime of your printer if you do use refills. Poor quality ink will block the jets/heads and cause your printer to produce poor quality prints.

You need to weigh up the pro's and con's as to whether you want to risk the cost of having to buy a new printer against the cost you will save on refill

    Reset your printer

You will firstly need to switch off your printer. Then simultaneously press the RETURN and READY keys while switching the printer on. This will take you to the Diagnostics Mode. The display unit will show the message 'Performing self test'. Choose 'Maintenance count'. Reset the count to make it zero. Then select the RETURN key and go back Diagnostics Mode. Then you can reset the printer to go back to the normal mode.

Hi, I have a lexmark x7170 and keep getting an error message "unsupported cartridge". Help please!!

If you receive an error message that tells you that you have an unsupported cartridge, then you need to remove the cartridge. After installing the appropriate type of ink cartridge you should no longer receive the error message and you can then perform a print test.
Instruction on how avoid unsupprted cartridge message.
  1. Lift up the scanner unit (with the power on). The printer cartridge carrier will move to the top of the printer into the loading position.
  2. Press down on the lever above the cartridge and then raise the cartridge lid. Remove the cartridge and make sure the cartridge supports no more than four colors (cyan, yellow, magenta and black) and a speed of 22 parts per notation.
  3. Insert the compatible ink cartridge into the carrier and then lower the cartridge lid. Close the scanner unit, then make sure plain white paper is inserted into the paper loader.
  4. Press the "OK" button on the control panel and the unsupported cartridge message should be gone. Press the "Select" button and a test alignment page will print.

Brand new lexmark printer, toner and cartridges installed, but get error 32 unsupported black cartridge error -tried updating drivers on lexmark site -tried taking cartridge out and reinstaling...

You could find the root cause by performing different steps. One of the easiest methods is that you need to make sure that the plastic protective tape which is usually used on the new black cartridge is off. Usually the user makes this mistake. This mistake might occurs due to absent-mindedness. The reason could also be some distractions which happen while loading the new black ink cartridge.

I have a lexmark 2580, I keep getting 'unsupported cartridge' message, and one of the lights on the printer is constantly blinking. I have brand new lexmark cartidges installed.

Problem Unsupported Cartridge; Error: "Unsupported cartridge"; Incompatible cartridge error; Incompatible cartridge in the printer; Cartridge not recognized Solution What you will see
When a cartridge is inserted, an Unsupported Cartridge error message is displayed on the printer operator panel.

I have a Lexmark x5470 & I get an error unsupported cartridge

Ink cartriges have chips in them, if the printer does so many prints without getting the "I've had a new Original Cart fitted" it will stop untill, you give it one, regardless if there ink or not

Im afraid it doesn't care that you only need to use the colour cartridge, it is designed to cost you money and make money for lexmark not refillers.

Welcome to our modern world, manufactures make the ink hard to recycle by incorperation of expensive chips that makes refillers, unable to make a easy dollar, because if that want to make cartridges that work they must also fit the expensive chip.

All empty cartridges have a little ink left in them because getting air in ink lines is not a thing we want.

This solution (RESET the BRICK - solution 1 above) worked for me!

I had a brand new out of the box Lexmark X4580 and after one or two prints I was suddenly getting a "Left Cartridge Incorrect" error showing on the Printer Control Panel and the printer would now all me to print anything.

After about an hour of trying this and that (cartridges in, out and shalen all about!) ; no avail, I tried this and hey presto, it worked.

When I removed the "Brick" power supply I left it until the Green LED had faded right out though, I dont know if that was significant or not. Fingers crossed all is sorted now!
