Maytag Dryer will not start again

I have been trying to repair my dryer from information on this site.Last week the dryer shut off after about 10 minutes of run 2 times then next time would not start at all. I took it apart and found a huge ball of debris at the squirrel cage(?) and replaced thermal and high heat fuses (kit) and the dryer run great yesterday for 2 loads then today has quit again after 10 mins. of drying. The larger fuse, high limit, is still good but thermal fuse blown again.

  • filippettij Feb 07, 2009

All wires appear intact. All venting is clean. Drum turns by hand freely. Breaker is not tripped. Because it has run and quit after approx. 10 mins. both times I suspected either heating coils or motor were overheating?

The dryer is about 9 years old. Is it difficult to replace a motor?

When this happens, does the breaker at the panel trip? If oyu have checked all the above that the other gentleman has suggested, the breaker itself may be weak and cannot handle the load now.

Ok, then that is telling me that there is a short in the wiring somewhere. You need to take a really close dedicated look at all the wiring around the high limit and the thermal. Also make sure that there is no clogs anywhere in the dryer itself.

Have you checked everything that you have changed already? Make sure that they have not popped again? Sounds like a possibilty of a short somewhere

Agreed --- the motor is overheating. But the question is --why? If the motor is old 8-10 years, then that is expected.

Your motor is overheating. That would be the only reason why you would pop your high limit.

Replacing the motor is fairly easy. You sound like you know what yuo are doing so I believe you can handle it

Check list:
clear vent pipe
dryer clean of lint
blower wheel tight
drum turns freely
fuse tight against heater.
Wires not shorted on high limit mounted above heater
electric bill paid.

It is fairly easy to replace the motor. The biggest problem is with the price of the motor.

Look at the big 250 degree limit that mounts on top of the element.Make sure vibration could not make the wires short to the cabinet.

Maytag neptune dryer doesnt heat

On the housing the element mounts in is a couple of safetys The smaller one is rated for 300f and the bigger one is rated for 250f. If the smaller one is tripped obviously you replace them both, making sure the vent to outside is clear. Them fuses blow or trip because of air restrictions.

The dryer runs but does not turn off i replaced the timer did not solve problem. the timer moves but on the last minute it does not shut off

I would guess venting may be restricted, remove vent tube and run dryer see if it turns off. I did find some information on a different site, here is the link, Good Luck Tim:
