Question about Kenmore 24032\24036 Top Load Washer

What is belt-like part doing on a kenmore direct drive washer!?

This is in reference to question by grammi posted Jan.3/09 concerning a no spin problem on a Kenmore washing machine. I too have a Kenmore albeit a different model no. ( 110.4564191) likely because purchased in Canada. I've been able to determine that the problem is a broken motor coupler but was just as baffled by what looked like a belt ( approx. 1/4" thick, black foam-like material ) that was looped around the clutch/brake housing area. It just seemed to be sitting there loosely and I couldn't see any purpose for it. What is it and where is it supposed to go? Note: Person responding to this part of grammi's question said that this was a sound deadening device concerning the brake housing and that it was not really required. This piece is not broken but likely just stretched to where it won't stay put. Any further information on this would be much appreciated. Thanks, Don

How do I replace belt on Kenmore 110.24932200? I can see the belt above the motor, but cannot see where it goes, no pulley, gear, etc...

Are you sure you see a belt on this washer? I ask because the model number you provided does NOT have a drive belt. Whirlpool manufactured top loaders (such as your Kenmore) use a motor coupling in place of a drive belt. This type of configuration is known as "Direct-Drive".

If the washer is not spinning or agitating, it can have several causes. Most commonly, this is caused by either a lid switch malfunction or a broken motor coupling. The following link explains how you can diagnose the problem yourself and repair:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3965207-whirlpool_top_loader_no_spin_problem

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

Prices vary between sites, so shop and compare. The first three sites I listed also include helpful exploded view parts diagrams to assist you in locating and properly identifying the parts you may need. If you do not wish to order parts on line, use the part numbers from the Sears website and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. Most of these parts are commonly sold as part of their in-store inventory.

Read through the information provided. If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this is helpful to you.

NOTE: If you refer to the "Brake,Clutch,Gearcase,Motor and Pump" parts section, you can see an entire view of the direct-drive system components. The motor coupling I am referring to is listed as item 13.

Washer wont spin

If this is a Kenmore top loader such as the one you posted this question under, it does not use a drive belt. These washers use a motor coupling in place of a drive belt and are referred to as "direct-drive" washers. More than likely, you have a broken motor coupling. Failure to agitate or spin accompanied by the sound of the motor running with no tub action are some of the symptoms you can experience with this problem. Just to be sure...the following link explains the symptoms of a failed motor coupling and how to diagnose the problem:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3965207-whirlpool_top_loader_no_spin_problem

If you determine the coupler to be defective, the next link explains how to access the coupler and replace it:

The part number is included with the instructions I provided. Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I listed also include helpful exploded view parts diagrams to assist you in locating and properly identifying the parts you need. If you do not wish to order parts on line, use the part numbers I provided and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. The coupler is usually sold as part of their in-store inventory. The average cost of a motor coupling is about $15.

If you have any questions, please post back with your complete MODEL NUMBER and let me know. I hope this helps you.

What all do I have to take off to get to the belt on bottom of washer, because my washer will not spin?

Motor/Carbon Brushes
If the washine machine motor runs, but refuses to go into spin mode, a good possibility is that the carbon brushes have worn

How do i know if my washer has a belt

If this is a Kenmore top loader resembling the one you posted this question under, it does not use a belt. Kenmore washers are manufactured by Whirlpool. They use a motor coupling in place of the drive belt. It couples the drive motor to the gearcase (transmission). This configuration is known as a direct drive system. For future reference you should include a MODEL NUMBER when posting your question, so I can confirm how the washer is configured. If you need further assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Spinning cycle is not spinning.

It could be belt or transmission. I would tip back the washer to check. Some times the belts are under the whole washer. depending on your model, it may be inside the housing. It's only a few screws to take off the front panel. They are pretty self explanitory. Let me know if this helps.

Not sure if manifold is leaking

Leaks water...check the pump first. The fill valve and hoses may be the next step. See how to take apart info. With the use of plastic drain hoses on many machines today, this has become a common leak trouble maker. The drain hose can rub the wall or a pipe and this will rub a hole in the drain hose.

Washer willl not spin

This could be a number of things:

It could be that the lid switch is fried. If you have a meter, you can test it.

In the Whirlpool/Kenmore washers, it is common for the lid plunger to stop making contact with the lid switch. Use a pen to manually press the lid switch actuator to test this.

If your washer is a belt-drive, the spin solenoid may be fried, or may have cut wires. Give a gentle tug on the wires and see if they are intact.

It could be that the drive belt is worn out. Examine it for glazing on the sides of the belt or cracks in the power side of the belt.

If it is a direct drive washer, it may just be a worn direct drive coupler.

I have an older model Kenmore washer - stopped spinning and aggitating - I took the control panel off, how do I reach the belt?

Your problem may not be a belt some Whirlpool built Kenmore washers are direct drive and have a coupler instead of a belt. The coupler is located on top of the motor. It consists of three parts two with prongs and one with holes for each of the prongs. If this is broken or badly worn the washer will not agitate or spin. Good luck. Oh the drive coupler part number is 285753A.
