Dell d400 problems with Western Digital 32 gig hard drive

A friend of mine bought used Dell 1.8 latitude d400, 60 g hard drive, connected a Western Digital 32 gig external hard drive via usb. The Dell sometimes finds the external and he can access the hard drive, most of the time it comes up it had found the usb storage then there's nothing - the external is then not recognized. He just wanted to add more hard drive. What could be going wrong? Does it need to be formatted?

His answer is: there is no power switch on external hard drive, just usb lead and that's it.

The external hard drive is a passbook it needs no other power other than the usb lead. He has no problems with the external hard drive on his PS3.

He has a Western Digital My Passport Essential 32 GB external hard drive. Which is USB
    2.0 powered.
The Dell Latitude d400 is plugged into the wall.

Is he using a USB hub or plugging directly into the laptop?

Are there any other USB devices plugged directly into the laptop? How many?

Hmm... does it at least have a plug-in power supply? It would be unusual to run the hard drive from the USB alone... there isn't enough power there, I think.

Is the external drive turned on or off when he plugs it in?

Try connecting to a differnt port if it still does the same thing change the usb cable because what i understand is there is a loose connection somewhere ... or the best thing is contact dell at 18006249896 and ask them that u want to change the internal hdd and they will tell u what maximum the system can support and which is available with them ... its their system and if u buy parts from them they have to support u and make sure they both work

How to find the part number of HDD 20 GB of Latitude D600?

Dell is very good at supplying part numbers on their home page. One of the ways to find it is do a yahoo search for dell latitude d600 parts.. This should bring you lots of info on d600. From there you can find a Dell parts supplier. here is a link from the search I did: drive

Please note. You wont find a Dell hard drive. They use Western Digital and other brands. Most any hard drive brand will work.

Guru, I cannot restore the system and I have no warranty, it is over 3 years old. Is it worth fixing or should I just buy a new computer? Thx for your quick reply!

If you know someone that has a windows disc you can try to use to make certain that yours is not damage. I would not finish loading, because you will not activate it, it will but it will ruin a activition on windows. Dell used Hitachi drives they are junk compare to western digital as far as shock absorbing.

If that doesn't load then your hard drive is bad, and that is inexpensive to repalce. My dell laptop crashed, and I bought mine for $60 at bestbuy. I went from 80 to 120 gigs. I would go with a western digital scorpio. They have a highest rading on shock absobing.
