Sony notebook, restore to factory settings without cd
I have a sony vaio laptop that has some virus issues. It often freezes and will not permit internet access. Unfortunately, I do not have the set up cd that came with the computer. I have tried to restore to an earlier date, but this seems to have no effect.

Press F4 at startup and choose advanced. This will give you the option to do a factory restore. You may want to check Sony's website because there is a recall on some Vaio's video graphics cards and batteries.
Are you doing DESTRUCTIVE recoveries or are you doing NONDESTRUCTIVE recoveries? Try another hard drive in the machine and recover to that. Nondestructive recoveries replace the operating system without destroying the personal data. Its possible the original problem is propagating over to the recovered systems. Do a destructive recovery. Understand any data not backed up will be destroyed. Possible the original problem was a trojan virus.
Don't format anything yet, download a free anti virus programme from below and install.
But first turn off system restore in My computer>System Restore Tab and tick the box turn off system restore on all drives.
When the virus is detected turn back on System restore.
