Sony notebook, restore to factory settings without cd

I have a sony vaio laptop that has some virus issues. It often freezes and will not permit internet access. Unfortunately, I do not have the set up cd that came with the computer. I have tried to restore to an earlier date, but this seems to have no effect.

Try to go to safe mode and scan with a antivirus program.

go to safemode by tapping F8 key while rebooting. when the advance menu options appears, select safemode with networking.

if you have an antivirus program already installed, update the virus definitions then scan the computer via safe mode.

also download a antispyware program, update virus definition database and scan in safemode.

you can find free antivirus and antispyware program here.

i would suggest using spybotseach and destroy for the antispyware program.

if you need further info...please let us know. good luck

It is freezing up a lot and i have to keep closing it down manually. i need to bring it back to factory settings: how do I do that? I tried restoring it to earlier settings, but it doesn't help.

Press F4 at startup and choose advanced. This will give you the option to do a factory restore. You may want to check Sony's website because there is a recall on some Vaio's video graphics cards and batteries.

    Hope this helps!

Can't restore factory intallations and settings: Vaio VGN-FE880E

Are you doing DESTRUCTIVE recoveries or are you doing NONDESTRUCTIVE recoveries? Try another hard drive in the machine and recover to that. Nondestructive recoveries replace the operating system without destroying the personal data. Its possible the original problem is propagating over to the recovered systems. Do a destructive recovery. Understand any data not backed up will be destroyed. Possible the original problem was a trojan virus.
