TDK DF2814APB Modem

PowerBooks and PCMCIA Modems

By Grant - usenet poster

I need to find out:

1. Is there anything special about a MAC specific PCMCIA
modem or can you just use one that is used on an Intel-based notebook?

2. Anyone who lives in Germany - Whose PCMCIA modem do you use
on your PowerBook? Is there anything special about
a "Global Class" PCMCIA modem which differentiates it from a
non-Global Class one. This TDK DF2814APB V.34 Global Class advertisement
says "It includes a built-in, user configurable DAA for international
use in all approved countries. One card certified for legal use
allows travelers to comply with each country's phone system
requirements."

Thanks in advance.

In the specific case of the TDK DF2814 Global Class modem, you have to be a
little careful about buying a PC version for a Mac. We include software
which initializes the modem once (just once, not on every powerup or
insertion). After that, they are basically the same, but you *cannot* use
the modem until it is initialized. The PC box has the PC software, the Mac
box has the Mac software. All other TDK modems will interchange between
platforms without a hitch.

In the particular case of the TDK, you can use the PC version. Most, but
not all, PC Card modems are completely compatible. Apple has a list of
some compatible PC Cards at

Yes. The TDK DF2814APB V.34 Global Class includes a built-in, user
configurable DAA for international use in all approved
countries(<# card certified for legal use allows travelers to comply with each
country's phone system requirements. You purchase a new plug adaptor for
each appropriate country. The same TDK website recommends a specific
manufacturer for these adaptors.

This means that you can use the same PC Card modem in a variety of
countries without having the local customs or PTT authorities try to
interfere with your use of the card. I have almost never seen this to be
a problem.

If you are likely to use the card only within Germany, then any DIN
approved PC card is likely to work.
