There's been some talk on this newsgroup in the past about a Digicam being no better than a Polaroid. Is this true? I have a Kodak DC290 and have found that it certainly is not as good as 35mm, but a Polaroid? I find this hard to believeprobably because I just spent $750. I have not matched them head to head by taking sample photos, so I would appreciate some expert opinions
$58 at B&H. If you want to cut costs and you're only using it for proofing the lighting rather than the complete composition, try picking up a 405 film holder for $75 and some 679 at $10.50 for 10.
I don't get this sort of problem, and I've used it with daylight and with strobes. The stuff *is* finicky about temperature, though, and can do some odd things on a cold day.
The biggest limitation of Polaroids for most people is that the cheap cameras don't focus. Most people who've only seen the output from a One-Step or similar model are surprised at how much better prints look from a Spectra AF model.

Polaroid makes so many different films for use in so many different ways that it's probably hard to generalize. I recently purchased some Polaroid 79 film for use in my 4x5 camera with my Polaroid film holder. Polaroid 79 (don't you just love Polaroid's totally unintuitve film designation system?) is a 4x5 instant color film that is promoted by Polaroid for use by professionals as a proofing film, the idea being that you use the film to check for various things such as color balance, lighting, composition, etc. and then make the "real" photograph with something else. The stuff is super expensive - $70 for a box of 20 exposures - and the color balance is horrible. The white walls in the room I was photographing came out as a sort of yellowish green (yes, the film is daylight balanced and yes, the room was lit only by daylight, no arificial lights). Anything would be better than this.

Same here! I think the progress has been FABULOUS. You get a lot better camera per dollar now than just a year ago. It's heating up fast. figure 5 years for today's $5,000 Nikon D1 to be where the 950 is today. The used camera market will be a whole new world!!

It all depends on what type of polaroids we are talking about. The standard polaroid cameras (like the one I have: the 635) are a load of crap. The photos are very expensive and don??t look good at all. My Agfa 1680 produces pictures that look a million times better than those polaroids. Really beyond comparison.

Bill that is pure BS. It was quite true 2 years ago but not now. I can do photos with my CP950 where people can't believe at the quality on paper. It is soo good that I always fool around some new friend letting them believe that it is a new, 2000$ reflex that did that. Note that I had Nikon reflex for 20 years, ONLY nikkor lenses etc.etc. The DC290 has probably a little less resolution (honestly I don't know) but I always heard good comments on Kodak digital in general. For sure a Reflex can be better than any digital if you develop and print the photos in a place with good quality. However 90% of the printing places suck and you get back also horrible negatives. I just can't wait to see what we will do in just 4 or 5 years from now, with huge CCDs and even better printing technology.

I wonder what the resolution is for Polaroid cameras? I think that the 1024x768 images that I get out of my Agfa 1280 show more detail than I have seen with standard polaroid prints. This might not hold true for their largest formats but it does for the smaller image sizes.
