    I'm struggling to get it to read the xp disc (that came with laptop new- I hadn't made a up to date boot disc!)

    It6 seems to copy files from memory as I can take out disc before it formats hd & copys.

    Very annoying!

This points to a RAM issue. Try running MEMTEST 86. A lot of XP install problems are RAM related

This erro indicates that its booting properly but cannot load system files.

some of the system files when copying went missing thats why it cannot boot properly. get a new copy of winxp cd (a good one) then try the installation again.

let as know.

I have had this problem in the past and it was a virus. I had to reformat the hard driver then renstall the windows.

Bootmgr is missing on Windows XP System. Gateway

Download this Recovery Console BootCD
http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso

Burn the image (ISO) to CD.
Boot from the newly created Recovery Console BootCD
Log into the Administrator account (press 1 then press enter)
On the command prompt type: chkdsk c: /r (and then press enter) Note one space after "c:")
Once CheckDisk has finished repairing the faults, type Exit, and then Restart (remove the BootCD)
